Gautam Adani says trust, resilience key to building institutions and Viksit Bharat

Ahmedabad, August 12, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani on Wednesday said the nearly two-year legal battle stemming from allegations by US short seller Hindenburg and subsequent proceedings by the US Department of Justice had deepened his faith in the rule of law, while reinforcing the importance of trust, resilience and responsibility in institution-building.

Addressing more than three lakh employees and partners across over 700 locations during the second edition of ‘Apni Baat, Apno Ke Saath’, organised ahead of India’s 80th Independence Day, Adani reflected on the challenges faced by the Group since the Hindenburg report in 2023 and the subsequent DoJ proceedings.

His remarks came two days after a US District Court in the Eastern District of New York permanently dismissed with prejudice the DoJ’s criminal case against him.

Adani said the experience had left him more humble and strengthened his belief that individuals and institutions must stand by their truth while allowing judicial processes to run their course with patience and dignity.

Drawing on his own journey, Adani recalled leaving home at the age of 16 and starting out in Mumbai before building his business from the ground up. He said the experience had taught him that trust could neither be demanded nor inherited, but had to be earned through character, consistency and keeping one’s word.

He invoked the traditional metaphor of ‘Samudra Manthan’, saying that meaningful journeys undertaken by individuals, institutions and nations inevitably encounter turbulence before their true strength emerges.

Adani also recalled the Group’s decision following the Hindenburg report to return the proceeds of its fully subscribed Rs 20,000 crore Follow-on Public Offer (FPO), despite being legally entitled to proceed with the issue.

He attributed the decision to a principle instilled by his father — that trust was more valuable than a legal entitlement. The decision, he said, was ultimately about preserving investor confidence.

Reflecting on the DoJ proceedings, Adani described their outcome as vindication and said the episode had reshaped his understanding of leadership, resilience and institutional responsibility.

He said what stood out during the legal proceedings was the determination of employees, workers, suppliers, contractors, vendors and other partners, who continued their work despite the intense public scrutiny. Engineers kept projects moving, teams remained focused on execution and operations continued across the Group’s businesses.

That continuity was also reflected in the Group’s investments, with capital expenditure reaching Rs 1.53 lakh crore last year. Investments continued across ports, airports, logistics, renewable energy, transmission, digital infrastructure and manufacturing.

Adani, however, said financial numbers represented only one part of the Group’s journey, identifying the wider ‘Adani Parivar’ as his greatest source of pride.

He also expressed gratitude to people across the country who had offered support during the difficult period, including strangers who stopped him to convey encouragement. At the same time, he acknowledged critics, saying their questions had encouraged introspection and reinforced the need to remain grounded.

Looking towards India’s centenary of Independence in 2047, Adani urged employees and partners to consider how their generation would be remembered.

He said India’s progress should ultimately be measured not only by the infrastructure it creates but also by the opportunities it generates, the communities it strengthens and the values its institutions uphold.

Adani said enduring institutions are remembered less for the crises they encounter than for the values they preserve while navigating them, adding that India’s journey towards a Viksit Bharat would require institutions capable of earning trust, withstanding adversity and leaving future generations stronger.
