Assam’s flood situation remained critical on Friday, with more than 1.55 lakh people affected across 13 districts as the death toll in this year’s floods climbed to 98, officials said.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), 1,55,849 people in 464 villages across 33 revenue circles are currently affected by the floods.
Golaghat has reported the highest number of affected people at 58,750, followed by Sivasagar with 48,286, Jorhat with 25,259, Charaideo with 12,779, Nagaon with 5,424, Darrang with 3,367 and Dhemaji with 1,265.
Floodwaters have submerged 10,748.64 hectares of crop fields across the state, adding to the impact on the rural economy.
Authorities have set up 73 relief camps and relief distribution centres in the affected districts. As many as 10,326 people are currently sheltering in relief camps, while another 6,881 are receiving assistance through relief distribution centres.
The Dhansiri (South) river at Golaghat and Numaligarh, along with the Kushiyara river in Sribhumi district, was flowing above the danger mark on Friday morning. However, no river had crossed its highest flood level, according to ASDMA.
The floods have also affected livestock, with 47,879 animals reported impacted. In addition, 126 houses have been completely damaged and 344 partially damaged in the affected areas.
Rescue and relief operations are continuing with the involvement of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Civil Defence personnel and other agencies. Authorities have deployed 219 rescue teams, eight boats and several medical teams.
Relief supplies, including foodgrains, drinking water, baby food and other essential items, are being distributed among affected residents.
Authorities are maintaining close watch on the situation and have urged people in vulnerable areas to remain alert as water levels in several rivers continue to fluctuate.
