The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Wednesday announced a reward of Rs 15 lakh for information leading to the arrest of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist Mohammad Lateef Bhat, who is allegedly involved in the killing of a police personnel in Anantnag town last month.
Police have put up posters carrying the photograph of the accused terrorist at prominent locations across the Valley, seeking credible information that could help in his arrest.
According to police, Bhat was involved in the killing of Head Constable Ashiq Hussain Qureshi on July 22 in Anantnag market, where the officer was deployed for Yatra duty. The photograph displayed on the posters was reportedly captured from CCTV footage showing the terrorist fleeing the area after the attack.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police said that since the beginning of terrorist violence in 1989, a total of 1,614 police personnel have lost their lives while fighting militancy in the region. The deceased include personnel from different ranks, ranging from constables and Special Police Officers (SPOs) to senior officers.
Police said around 515 SPOs have also sacrificed their lives in the line of duty during anti-terror operations.
Meanwhile, security forces continue their search for those responsible for the killing of two migrant labourers in Kulgam district on July 31.
The victims, identified as Deepak and Bopinder from Chhattisgarh, were working at a brick kiln in Kellam village when they were attacked by terrorists. Deepak succumbed to injuries at Government Medical College Hospital, Anantnag, on the day of the attack, while Bopinder, who was critically injured, died at Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Srinagar, on August 1.
The killings drew widespread condemnation from political, religious and social organisations across Jammu and Kashmir.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had announced an ex gratia relief of Rs 15 lakh each for the next of kin of the two migrant workers killed in the attack.
