The Punjab Government has approved the construction of a 60 Million Litres Per Day (MLD) Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) and a pumping station for Amritsar under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme, with the project expected to significantly strengthen the city’s sewerage infrastructure.
According to the government, the tendering process for the project is already underway and is scheduled to conclude in August 2026. Construction work is expected to commence immediately thereafter.
The new STP is aimed at enhancing Amritsar’s sewage treatment capacity by reducing the burden on the existing infrastructure and curbing the discharge of untreated sewage. The facility will also include provisions for generating Bio-CNG from sewage waste, promoting clean energy production and sustainable waste management.
The project forms part of the Punjab Government’s broader urban infrastructure development programme under AMRUT 2.0, which focuses on improving civic amenities across cities in the state.
The government said more than 64 projects have already been completed under the scheme, while another 50 to 60 projects are targeted for completion by March 2027.
Local Government Minister Harjot Singh Bains said the state government is committed to addressing key civic issues in Amritsar, including sewerage and solid waste management.
“Amritsar is our holy city and we are committed to resolving its sewerage, garbage and other civic issues. This is what the Bhagwant Mann Government stands for—building infrastructure that serves people for the long term,” the Minister said.
