An India-flagged cargo vessel sank after coming under attack from an explosives-laden boat in the Red Sea off Yemen’s western coast, with all 14 crew members, including 13 Indian sailors, rescued safely by Yemeni forces.
According to Yemen’s government-affiliated National Resistance Forces (NRF), coast guard and naval units carried out a joint rescue operation after the cargo vessel Faize Noore Oliya was attacked around 13 nautical miles south of the Houthi-controlled port city of Hodeidah. The statement did not specify when the attack took place.
The NRF said all 14 crew members were rescued and brought to safety. The rescued personnel included 13 Indian nationals and one Yemeni sailor. They received medical assistance after the rescue, and no casualties were reported.
The NRF blamed Yemen’s Houthi group for the attack. The Houthis had not issued any response to the allegation at the time of reporting.
The latest incident comes amid continuing security concerns in the Red Sea, a vital international shipping route that has witnessed repeated attacks on commercial vessels in recent months.
Last month, a Saudi company-owned oil tanker, Encelia, caught fire after being attacked while sailing in the Red Sea. Saudi Arabia’s Transport General Authority had confirmed that all crew members were safe and that authorities had taken measures to secure the vessel and protect the marine environment.
According to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), that attack occurred about 70 nautical miles southwest of Al Shuqaiq in Saudi Arabia.
On July 23, the Houthi group claimed responsibility for attacks on the Saudi tankers Encelia and Layla, saying it had used ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and drones. The group said the vessels had violated maritime restrictions it had imposed on Saudi-linked shipping, citing the Kingdom’s long-standing blockade of areas under Houthi control.
