RBI Expected to Keep Interest Rates Unchanged as Inflation Remains Within Target Range

Mumbai, August 4, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is likely to maintain the status quo on key interest rates in its upcoming monetary policy review, with analysts expecting the central bank to continue prioritising economic growth amid easing inflationary concerns.

The RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) is expected to hold rates steady as consumer price inflation remains within the central bank’s tolerance range of 2-6 per cent. The RBI aims to keep inflation around the medium-term target of 4 per cent while supporting sustainable economic expansion.

India’s retail inflation stood at 4.38 per cent in June, with the rise attributed largely to higher global crude oil prices and an increase in the cost of some imported commodities used in production. However, public sector oil companies have absorbed much of the rise in crude prices to limit the impact on consumers.

RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra has indicated that the central bank would consider a rate increase only if inflationary pressures become widespread and persistent rather than being driven by temporary supply-side factors.

According to the RBI’s economic projections released in June, retail inflation is estimated at 5.1 per cent for the financial year ending March 31, 2027, while India’s economic growth is projected at 6.6 per cent. The forecast was based on an assumption of crude oil prices averaging around $95 per barrel. With crude prices remaining below that level, analysts expect the projections to remain largely intact.

India’s strategy of sourcing crude oil at discounted rates, including increased imports from Russia, has helped contain energy costs. In July, more than half of India’s crude imports came from Russia, reducing dependence on traditional Gulf suppliers. Public sector oil companies have also shifted more than 70 per cent of their LPG imports to the United States.

Some economists had suggested that the RBI could support the weakening rupee by raising interest rates to attract foreign investment. However, recent measures, including removal of capital gains tax on foreign investors holding Indian government bonds and steps to make dollar deposit schemes for non-resident Indians more attractive, have helped draw nearly $40 billion in foreign exchange inflows and supported currency stability.
