The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has appointed Monisha Chakraborty as Executive Director (ED) with effect from Monday. In her new role, she will oversee the Foreign Exchange Department and the Financial Markets Regulation Department.
A career central banker with more than three decades of experience at the RBI, Chakraborty has served in several key areas, including banking supervision, foreign exchange management, and government and bank accounts. She was also associated with a technical committee constituted to review the format of the RBI’s Balance Sheet and Profit and Loss Account and has previously served as Banking Ombudsman.
Before her elevation as Executive Director, Chakraborty was serving as Chief General Manager-in-Charge of the Department of Supervision.
Academically, she holds a degree in Economics and a Master’s degree in Business Economics from the University of Delhi.
The appointment follows another recent leadership change at the central bank. Last month, the RBI appointed Ravi Shankar as Executive Director. Prior to his promotion, he served as Adviser-in-Charge of the Department of Statistics and Information Management and continues to head the same department in his new capacity.
Shankar, a career central banker and statistician, has more than three decades of experience with the RBI. During his tenure, he has worked in areas such as corporate and banking statistics, the government securities market, settlement systems, debt management and survey-related functions.
The RBI has also noted his contribution to macroeconomic policymaking through his participation in several committees and working groups dealing with macroeconomic statistics and policy issues.
Shankar holds a Master’s degree in Statistics from Banaras Hindu University and a Diploma in Development Policy and Planning from the Institute of Economic Growth, Delhi.
The latest appointments are part of the RBI’s efforts to strengthen leadership across critical operational and regulatory functions.
