President Droupadi Murmu on Sunday flagged off the inaugural Soldierathon at the Forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan, an event organised to mark the 253-year legacy of the President’s Bodyguard (PBG) and honour the courage and sacrifice of Indian soldiers.
Mizoram Governor General V.K. Singh (Retd.) also attended the event.
The Soldierathon is aimed at strengthening the bond between citizens and the Armed Forces under the theme “Run for Soldiers, Run with Soldiers” and “Supporting Real Heroes – the Armed Forces of India.” The event also commemorates 27 years of India’s victory in the Kargil War.
According to Rashtrapati Bhavan, the initiative provides a platform for citizens to express solidarity with soldiers through participation while recognising their dedication, bravery and service to the nation.
The President’s Bodyguard, raised in 1773, is the senior-most regiment of the Indian Armed Forces and is recognised as the world’s only Airborne Cavalry Regiment. Its personnel undergo specialised training as both paratroopers and tankmen, while continuing ceremonial duties and remaining prepared for operational deployments.
The regiment’s soldiers are also deployed in challenging locations, including regular postings at the Siachen Glacier.
The first President’s Bodyguard Soldierathon has been organised to celebrate the regiment’s distinguished history and pay tribute to armed forces personnel who have served the country with valour.
The event has been opened to participants from diverse backgrounds, including professional runners, students, families, educational institutions and corporate groups. Participants can take part in categories such as 10 km, 5 km, 3 km and the Cheer Buddy event.
Organisers said the proceeds from the Soldierathon will support the welfare of the troops and horses of the President’s Bodyguard while helping preserve the regiment’s equestrian heritage.
The initiative will also contribute towards the Paraplegic Rehabilitation Centre, which provides medical care, rehabilitation and support to soldiers who have suffered life-changing injuries.
Organised in partnership with Wonder Cement and Bhutani Infra, the Soldierathon aims to promote fitness, community participation and awareness about the values and traditions of the Indian Armed Forces.
The organisers said the event will be conducted annually at different military stations across the country, covering metropolitan cities and smaller towns to encourage wider public involvement.
