Punjab and Sikh Panth need a principled and sincere leadership: Ravi Inder Singh

Chandigarh, May 2, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Former Speaker of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha and Patron of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Punar Surjit), Ravi Inder Singh, while recalling the past in the context of the present political circumstances, made it clear that the situation that has now emerged is highly challenging. To counter these challenges, there is an immense need for a principled, sincere, and honest leadership – one that desires selfless service without any lust for office.

He appealed to the Sikh Panth that during the ongoing census, every member of each household – from children to the elderly – should get their identity registered as ‘Punjabi language speaking’. The entire Sikh community should register as ‘Singh’ and ‘Kaur’ in the census.

He said that the census is a very important opportunity to constitutionally strengthen our religious and linguistic existence. Therefore, the entire Sikh community must remain conscious of its religious and linguistic identity. This is a means of demonstrating our numbers and our national strength.

Ravi Inder Singh emphasised the need for Panchayats, Gurdwara management committees, and student organisations to reach every household and disseminate this information. These institutions must ensure that no Sikh individual is left without registering their correct identity.

Referring to the time of the formation of the Punjabi Suba, he said with regret that back then, some Punjabi‑speaking people acted ungratefully and got their mother tongue registered as Hindi. This caused great loss to Punjab, and several Punjabi‑speaking areas were made part of Haryana and Himachal Pradesh.

Ravi Inder Singh further said with deep regret that instead of serving the Sikh Panth, some power‑hungry, so‑called Sikh leaders are busy finding new political shelters. The people of Punjab and the Sikh Panth must remain aware of the political, religious, and social situation. Sikh history teaches that genuine leadership does not survive on selfishness. If seriousness towards principles is not shown, the new generation will never forgive.

Ravi Inder Singh appealed to all office‑bearers of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Punar Surjit), party workers, and all those parties that accept the Hukamnama issued by Sri Akal Takht Sahib – the supreme institution of the Sikh Panth – on December 2, 2024, to consider it their duty to reach every household regarding the census and deliver the above message.

This statement was issued by the party’s Media Incharge, Tajinder Singh Pannu.
