Anti-Sacrilege Law Was Enacted by Vidhan Sabha in 2016: Sukhbir Badal on Special Session

Kotkapura, March 22, 2026(Yes Punjab News)

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal today asked chief minister Bhagwant Mann to stop doing dramas in the name of special sessions of the Vidhan Sabha even as he asserted that the erstwhile SAD government had already enacted an anti-sacrilege law in 2016.

Addressing a mammoth rally here along with senior leader Mantar Singh Brar, the SAD president said the anti- sacrilege law passed by the Vidhan Sabha in 2016 stipulated life sentence to anyone committing sacrilege against Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj. “The law is yet to be ratified by the centre.

Instead of indulging in a drama on this sensitive issue, the chief minister should take up this matter with the central government and get it passed”, he asserted.
Asserting that sacrileges had started in Punjab in 2015 after the advent of the Aam Aadmi Party into the State, Mr Sukhbir Badal said “AAP legislator Naresh Yadav was even convicted in a sacrilege case but AAP is yet to tell Punjabis why it defended Yadav and even fielded it’s senior most leaders – Harpal Cheema and Harjot Bains to fight his case”.

Appealing to the people to support the SAD and shun the parties of Delhi who had always discriminated against Punjab, Mr Badal said “Modi ji (Prime minister Narendra Modi), Rahul Gandhi and Arvind Kejriwal have no concern for you. The SAD however is part and parcel of your family. We have always stood with you. We stand for ‘sewa’ while the parties of Delhi only believe in ruling and looting”.

Speaking about the development done in Kotkapura, Mr Badal said “we constructed over bridges over railways lines & improved the road and sewerage network of town”. He said all development in this as well as neighbouring constituencies had occurred during SAD tenure while giving the example of how former Congress chief minister Harcharan Brar could not even remove water logging from the area or even upgrade the government school in his village of Sarainaga.

The SAD president also all those bereft of tubewell connections would get the same immediately after the SAD government was formed in 2027. “We will also give 12 hour power facility to farmers during day time”. He also announced that an Rs 10 lakh interest free loan would be offered to youth besides restarting an expanded Aata Dal scheme and raising old age pension to Rs 3,100 per month and Shagun allowance to Rs 1 lakh. He also announced establishment of a World Skill University with its affiliated Colleges in each district, establishment of a medical and veterinary college in each district and government jobs for Punjabis only.

Beopar Wing district president Ravinder Garg speaking on the occasion said ever since the central government had reduced commission on food grains the “arhatiyas’ were suffering. He said the Haryana government was compensating arhatiyas by giving the additional compensation from its budget and demanded the same be done in Punjab once the SAD formed the government in the State. He also disclosed that the AAP govermental was not releasing EPF benefits of Rs 50 crores to arhatiyas.

Senior leaders who spoke on the occasion included Sikandar Singh Maluka, Sher Singh Mandwala, Satish Grover, Bibi Gurinder Kaur Bholuwala, Suba Singh Badal, Gurchet Singh Bargari, Parambans Romana and Anupartap Singh Brar.
