Under its ongoing ‘Yudh Nashean Virudh’ campaign, the Punjab Government on Sunday organised a magnificent marathon dedicated to martyrdom of Shaheed-e-Azam Sardar Bhagat Singh at local Sri Guru Gobind Singh Khalsa College.
Running for social cause, the enthusiastic participation more than 4000 people from different walks of life across Punjab pledged to spread awareness against drug abuse besides promoting sports among youngsters.
The first category of the 42-kilometre run flagged off at 05: 00 am by Punjab Vidhan Sabha Deputy Speaker Jai Krishan Singh Rouri. He commended the spirit of participants, running to disseminate awareness for wiping out social menace of drugs.
Describing Punjabis brave & courageous, Rouri said that eradicating drugs is not a formidable challenge for them and with collective efforts it could be eliminated efficaciously. The Punjab Government is continuously taking strong actions to make the state free of this social evil so as to fulfil the dream of a Rangla Punjab.
Highlighting the government’s commitment under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Deputy Speaker stated that the marathon aimed to sensitize people about the ill-effects of drugs while motivating youth to embrace sports. The overwhelming response, he said, reflects the growing impact of these initiatives at the grassroots level.
The Deputy Speaker also flagged off the 21-km and 10-km races, applauding the significant enthusiasm of the youth. He recalled that Mahilpur was known as hub of football but later the drugs faced severe challenge of drugs. He said that now with renewed efforts, the government is working to restore its sporting legacy and steer youth toward a healthier future.
Chief Minister’s wife, Dr. Gurpreet Kaur, flagged off the 5-kilometre race. She lauded the significant participation of girls, highlighting their equal representation alongside boys as a positive sign in the society. She reiterated the government’s dedication to eradicating drug abuse and promoting sports, adding that such initiatives are crucial for safeguarding future generations. She congratulated the organizers for successfully conducting the marathon.
Nephew of Shaheed-e-Azam Sardar Bhagat Singh, Kiranjit Singh Sandhu, who attended the event as a special guest, said that this initiative to keep youth healthy and away from drugs is highly commendable.
He added that Bhagat Singh’s vision was to provide equality and a healthy life to all, and sacrificed his life for future generations. He urged everyone to contribute towards eliminating social evils and fulfilling the dreams of the martyrs.
Prize Details for Marathon Winners:
Deputy Speaker informed that 142 runners participated in the 42-kilometre race, 350 in the 21-kilometre category, 513 in the 10-kilometre race, and 2867 people in various age groups took part in the 5-kilometre race.
In the 42-kilometre category, the prize money for both men and women included:
First prize – Rs 1,00,000; Second – Rs 75,000; Third – Rs 40,000; Fourth – Rs 30,000; Fifth – Rs 20,000; Sixth – Rs 15,000; Seventh – Rs 10,000; Eighth – Rs 8,000; Ninth – Rs 6,000 and Tenth – Rs 5,000.
In the 21-kilometre category (age groups: 19–30, 31–40, 41–50, 51–60, and above 60 years), the first three winners received Rs 30,000, Rs 15,000, and Rs 10,000 respectively.
In the 10-kilometre category the age group the first three winners received Rs 20,000, Rs 10,000, and Rs 5,000 respectively.
In the 5-kilometre category, for both men and women: the First prize was Rs 5,000; Second – Rs 3,000; Third – Rs 2,000; Fourth – Rs 1,500; Fifth – Rs 1,000; Sixth – Rs 900; Seventh –Rs 800; Eighth – Rs 700; Ninth – Rs 600 and Tenth – Rs 500.
For specially-abled participants in the 1-kilometre category: First prize was Rs 5,000; Second – Rs 3,000; Third –Rs 2,000; Fourth – Rs 1,500; Fifth and Sixth – Rs 1,000 each.On this occasion, several renowned sportspersons and officials were present, including Olympian and Arjuna Awardee Swaran Singh, Asian champions Charnmohan, Hardeep Singh, Prabhjot Singh, Komalpreet Shukla, Anmol Kaur, Rajwinder Kaur, World Police Games champion Veerpal Kaur, Commonwealth champion Ravneet Kaur, Ramanpreet Kaur, Navneet Kaur, Baljinder Singh, Parvinder Singh, Harpreet Singh, Randeep Kaur, Jagmeet Singh, World Cup champion Priyanka Thakur, Gursharanpreet Kaur, Aman Bhai, Sunny, Pradeep Kumar, Deputy Commissioner Aashika Jain, SSP Sandeep Kumar Malik, District Sports Officer Gurpreet Singh, Aam Aadmi Party leaders Parminder Goldy, Prince Chaudhary, Charanjit Kaur Haveli, Kuljit Singh, Inderjit Singh, Navpreet Kaur, Jujhar Singh, Kamlesh, College Principal Dr. Parminder Singh, sports promoter Kulwant Singh Sangha, along with representatives of panchayats, social organizations, and students from various schools and colleges.
