FIR Filed Against Former Punjab Minister Laljit Bhullar, Father and Aide in Suicide Case

Amritsar, March 22, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

In a major development that has sent shockwaves across Punjab’s political landscape, Amritsar Police have registered a criminal case against former Punjab Transport Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar, his father Sukhdev Bhullar, and his personal assistant Dilbagh Singh Bagha. The case is linked to the alleged abetment of suicide of Punjab Warehousing Corporation District Manager Gagandeep Singh Randhawa.

The FIR (No. 0052) was lodged at Ranjit Avenue Police Station late Saturday night at 11:51 PM under Sections 108 (abetment to suicide), 351 (criminal intimidation), and 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Allegations by Family Members

The complaint was filed by the deceased’s wife, Upinder Kaur, who made serious allegations against the accused. She claimed that her husband was subjected to physical assault and severe humiliation by Bhullar, his father, and his aide. According to her statement, Randhawa was allegedly threatened and even struck with a pistol, leading to extreme mental distress that ultimately drove him to take his own life.

Family members further stated that Randhawa had been under prolonged psychological pressure, which had forced him to relocate his immediate family, including his widowed mother, for safety reasons.

Suicide and Viral Video Intensify Case

44-year-old Randhawa died by suicide early Saturday morning at his residence in Amritsar. Initial reports suggest he consumed Sulphas, a highly toxic substance.

The case gained widespread attention after a 12-second video, allegedly recorded by Randhawa before his death, surfaced online. In the clip, he purportedly named Laljit Singh Bhullar as responsible for his extreme step. The video quickly went viral, sparking outrage and intensifying public scrutiny.

Opposition Plans Joint Dharna and Gherao

In an unprecedented move, the Shiromani Akali Dal, Congress, and the BJP on Saturday jointly announced their decision to gherao the residence of the Punjab Chief Minister on Sunday.

Political Fallout and Resignation

Amid mounting pressure and growing criticism from opposition parties, Laljit Singh Bhullar resigned from his ministerial position on Saturday. His resignation marked a significant turning point in the unfolding controversy.

Several prominent political leaders, SAD President Sukhbir Singh Badal, Senior Congress leader and LoP Partap Singh Bajwa, BJP Punjab Chief Sunil Jakhar, Amritsar MP Gurjit Singh Aujla, senior Akali leader Bikram Singh Majithia, and former Congress MLA Harminder Singh Gill were among those who strongly criticized the government and demanded accountability.

Government Assures Fair Probe

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann expressed condolences over Randhawa’s death and assured a thorough and impartial investigation. He has directed the Chief Secretary to oversee the probe and ensure justice is served.

Political Storm Across Punjab

The incident has triggered a major political storm in the state, with opposition parties targeting the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government over alleged misuse of power. Leaders across party lines visited the bereaved family at their residence in Ranjit Avenue, expressing solidarity and demanding strict action against those responsible.

Serious Charges Under BNS

The charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita reflect the gravity of the allegations:

  • Section 108: Abetment to suicide
  • Section 351: Criminal intimidation
  • Section 3(5): Acts done with common intention

Legal experts suggest that if proven, these charges could carry significant penalties.
