WSO Calls for Hate Crime Investigation After Killing of Sikh Man in Alberta

Edmonton, March 18, 2026(Yes Punjab News)

The World Sikh Organization of Canada (WSO) expresses its deep concern following the fatal shooting of 22-year-old Birinder Singh near Leduc, Alberta on March 14, 2026.

According to reports, Mr. Singh was travelling on Highway 2 when occupants of a pickup truck opened fire on his vehicle in a brazen and apparently unprovoked daytime attack. Mr. Singh, who had recently moved to Edmonton and was beginning to establish his life in Canada, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The incident comes amid a disturbing rise in anti-Sikh hate across Canada including crimes and incidents targeting Sikhs.

WSO is calling on the Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit to investigate this killing as a potential hate-motivated crime.

WSO President Danish Singh said today, “The facts surrounding Birinder Singh’s murder are deeply troubling. This appears to have been a sudden, unprovoked act of extreme violence. Given the current rise in anti-Sikh hate we are seeing, it is critical that investigators and the RCMP examine whether Birinder Singh was targeted because of his Sikh identity.

We are seeing a dramatic increase in poisonous and hateful narratives targeting Sikhs. This includes rhetoric from white nationalist groups promoting anti-immigrant hate, as well as coordinated disinformation campaigns originating from sources in India that seek to vilify and dehumanize Sikhs in Canada. This environment has created real risks for our community. When communities are repeatedly targeted and demonized, it increases the likelihood of acts of violence such as this. This must be taken seriously by law enforcement and government.”

WSO urges anyone with information about this attack to come forward and also calls on Sikhs to report every instance of hate, both to police and through WSO’s reporting portal, so that these incidents are not ignored and those responsible are held accountable.

WSO is a non-profit national organization with a mandate to promote and protect the interests of Canadian Sikhs as well as to promote and advocate for the protection of human rights of all individuals.
