UNITED SIKHS has formally sent a detailed letter to the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) urging the immediate withdrawal of recent Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) cancellation notices that have upended the livelihoods of hundreds of lawful immigrant truck drivers.
The DMV’s actions have disproportionately affected Sikh, Punjabi, Latino and other immigrant truckers who hold valid work authorization and have served as essential contributors to California’s economy and supply chain. UNITED SIKHS’ letter outlines multiple legal and procedural defects in the cancellation process and calls for swift corrective action to protect due process, civil rights, and economic stability for impacted families.
“These CDL cancellations did not just remove credentials, they put hardworking families at risk and undermined trust in a system meant to serve all Californians fairly,” the letter states. UNITED SIKHS is calling on the DMV to halt enforcement of the defective notices, reinstate wrongfully canceled licenses and ensure that all drivers are treated with transparency and respect under the law.
UNITED SIKHS’ International Civil and Human Rights Advocacy (ICHRA) team strongly asserts that “these cancellations are legally void. The DMV has both the authority and the obligation to rescind the notices, reissue corrected CDLs, and restore due process before more families are harmed.”
“The solution is clear: halt enforcement, reinstate valid CDLs, and issue written guidance confirming what California law already allows. Every day of delay deepens the damage.” Bhupinder Kaur, Director of Operations, UNITED SIKHS.
UNITED SIKHS Call to Action
UNITED SIKHS Programs Director Hardayal Singh stated:
“When you take away a driver’s CDL without cause, you don’t just take a license – you take food off the table and stability from entire families who keep California’s economy moving.”
UNITED SIKHS is calling for:
• Immediate rescission of unlawful CDL cancellation notices
• Same‑day reinstatement of valid CDLs
• Clear guidance on acceptable documentation
• Guaranteed due process and transparent communication for affected drivers
The organization remains steadfast in its commitment to stand with truckers and to advocate for fair, lawful, and equitable treatment under California law.
