UNITED SIKHS Calls for Immediate End to Arbitrary License Revocations

New York, January 22, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

UNITED SIKHS, founded in 1999 to defend taxi drivers and working people under a simple, non-negotiable principle: workers matter.

Today, just as in 1999, taxi drivers’ DMV licenses are their livelihoods. When those licenses are taken, when licenses are stripped without due process, families lose income overnight, rent goes unpaid, food becomes uncertain, and communities are destabilized. Meanwhile, our cities and economies depend on these drivers to function.

UNITED SIKHS calls for urgent action to end the arbitrary revocation of drivers’ licenses by Departments of Motor Vehicles nationwide, an unjust practice that strips working families of their livelihoods and destabilizes entire communities.

“The DMV cannot be allowed to strip licenses based on subjective judgments, vague suspicions, or unarticulated standards,” said Wanda Sanchez-Day, Chief Legal Officer, UNITED SIKHS. “The government cannot simply say, ‘We believe you no longer deserve to work, and walk away. That is not regulation. It is an arbitrary punishment.”

“NY taxi drivers deserve answers about why they’re being asked to retest and answers about exactly why they failed the drivers test. NY DMV’s reported noncompliance is unfair, leaving drivers confused and unemployed with a one‑year suspension and no further help,”
said Jaspal Kaur, Community Outreach Manager.
Due Process is the Law

Due process requires actual and timely notice, specific allegations, and a real opportunity to be heard before a license is taken. These protections are not technicalities; they are the foundation of civil rights for every person subject to government authority. Anything less is a violation of constitutional principles and a direct attack on working families.

Immediate Action Needed

UNITED SIKHS demands immediate action to halt arbitrary revocations and protect the most vulnerable workers from irreparable harm. From CDL holders in California and Texas to taxi drivers in New York City, these workers must be protected, not tomorrow, not after livelihoods are destroyed, but now.

“Our economy relies on them,” added Sanchez-Day. “Government must be held to the same standards of accountability and fairness it is legally bound to enforce.”

Workers matter and until every driver’s right to due process is protected, UNITED SIKHS will not relent.
