In a disturbing incident that has raised serious concerns in Punjab’s border district, two police personnel were found dead with bullet injuries near the Indo-Pak International Border in Gurdaspur on Sunday.
The deceased have been identified as Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Gurnam Singh and home guard personnel Ashok Kumar. Both were deployed at a checkpoint (naka) in Adian village under the Dorangla police station when the incident occurred.
The bodies were discovered after reports of gunfire from the area. The bodies of the officers were later shifted to Gurdaspur Civil Hospital for post-mortem examination. Authorities have cordoned off the site and launched a detailed investigation.
Conflicting Theories Under Investigation
The circumstances surrounding the deaths remain unclear, with officials examining multiple possibilities.
Theory 1: Alleged Altercation Between the Two Officers
Initial inputs suggest that an argument may have erupted between the two personnel during duty hours. According to early reports, the disagreement could have escalated into an exchange of fire, leading to fatal injuries for both officers.
However, police authorities have cautioned against drawing conclusions at this stage. Station House Officer (SHO) Banarsi Dass stated that investigations are ongoing and no theory has been officially confirmed.
Theory 2: Possible Third-Party Involvement
Another angle under scrutiny involves potential external involvement. Given the sensitive location of the checkpoint near the International Border, investigators are also probing whether a third party could have opened fire.
Security officials are examining reports that a suspected “carrier” — a term used for individuals who retrieve narcotics dropped by drones from across the border — may have been challenged by the officers, possibly leading to gunfire.
The Dorangla sector is considered vulnerable due to frequent attempts by Pakistan-based elements to push drugs, arms, and ammunition into Indian territory via drones. This has added complexity to the investigation.
Senior Officials Supervise Probe
Senior police officers rushed to the scene shortly after the incident was reported. Gurdaspur Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Aditya, Deputy Inspector General (Border) Sandeep Goel, and other officials inspected the area and directed forensic teams to examine weapons, spent cartridges, and other physical evidence.
The area has been sealed, and investigators are reconstructing the sequence of events using ballistic analysis and witness statements.
Authorities have confirmed that the exact cause of the firing will only be determined after a thorough probe.
Sensitive Border Location
Adian village lies close to the Indo-Pak International Border and is regarded as a strategically sensitive zone. The Border Security Force (BSF) maintains a strong presence in the region due to repeated instances of cross-border drone intrusions and smuggling activities.
The checkpoint where the incident occurred serves as part of the second line of defence, making the event particularly alarming for security agencies.
Official Statement Awaited
As of now, no formal statement has been issued clarifying the sequence of events. Police officials have urged the public to refrain from speculation while the investigation is underway.
The tragic deaths of the two personnel have sent shockwaves through the local police force and the community. Further details are expected once forensic reports and internal findings are completed.
Authorities have assured that the matter is being examined from all possible angles to ensure transparency and accountability.
