Threat to Majithia – ADGP, Jail Superintendent to Be Held Responsible for Any Untoward Incident: High Court

Chandigarh, January 13, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Monday directed the Punjab Government to ensure adequate security for jailed former Punjab minister and senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia, who is currently lodged in Nabha High Security Jail.

The High Court took serious note of intelligence inputs indicating a potential threat to Majithia’s life from the banned outfit Babbar Khalsa International (BKI). The alert had earlier been issued by the Punjab Special Director General of Police (Intelligence).

Court Calls Threat to Life a Serious Issue

Hearing an urgent petition filed by Majithia’s counsel D.S. Sobti, Justice Jasgurpreet Singh Puri observed that a threat to the life of a former minister is a matter of grave concern and cannot be taken lightly.

The court directed the Punjab Government to ensure complete security arrangements for Majithia inside the jail. It further warned that any untoward incident involving Majithia would make the ADGP (Prisons), Punjab, and the Superintendent of Nabha Jail personally accountable.

Background: Intelligence Alert Issued Earlier

Earlier, on January 9, 2026, Punjab Police Intelligence had sounded a high-level alert after receiving inputs from a central intelligence agency suggesting that Pakistan-based BKI may be planning to target the jailed Akali leader.

A confidential communication dated January 3, 2026, issued by the Special DGP (Intelligence), directed senior police and prison officials to adopt immediate preventive and precautionary measures. The alert stressed heightened vigilance and coordination among security agencies.

The AIG (Zonal), Intelligence, Patiala, was instructed to closely monitor the situation and keep the Intelligence Headquarters at SAS Nagar informed of all developments. The advisory was circulated to senior officers, including the Special DGP (Security), ADGP (Prisons), Special DGP (Law and Order), ADGP (AGTF), and other top intelligence officials.

Following the alert, security arrangements at Nabha Jail were reviewed, though officials did not disclose specific measures taken.

With the High Court’s latest directions, the Punjab Government is now under judicial obligation to ensure the safety and security of Bikram Majithia while he remains in judicial custody.
