Tewari requests Bhagwant Mann to explore judicial ways to reinstate Punjab’s representation to BBMB

Ropar, March 20, 2022 (Yes Punjab News)
Former union minister and sitting Lok Sabha Member Parliament from Sri Anandpur Sahib, Manish Tewari, has requested Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann to consult Advocate General, to explore judicial ways to reinstate Punjab’s permanent representation in the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB)..

MP Manish Tewari has asked CM Mann to explore the possibility of filing a lawsuit, challenging BBMB Amendment Rules 2022. “Request Chief Minister Punjab @BhagwantMann to consult with his Advocate General to explore the possibility of filing an original Suit under Article 131 of COI challenging BBMB ( Amendment) Rules 2022 as they discriminate against Punjab. As an MP from Punjab will file objections”, Manish Tewari tweeted.

In a notification in February 23, 2022, the Government of India had changed norms for selecting the full-time chairman and two members (power and irrigation) of the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) allowing anyone to apply.

As per the ongoing practice since long, two posts of full time members (power and irrigation) have always been filled by candidates of Punjab and Haryana. The members were generally nominated by respective state governments and goes on deputation to BBMB.

While the amended rules do not debar Punjab and Haryana from having their representatives apply for top BBMB posts-Member Power and member Irrigation, engineers from these states point out that there are no big dams/barrages in the region. Hence, they do not have the requisite experience to apply for the posts.
