Shiromani Akali Dal president and former Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal was injured after a Nihang allegedly attacked him with a kirpan at a gurdwara in Nanded, Maharashtra, on Thursday. A security personnel was also injured while intervening in the assault.
The incident took place around 11 a.m. at Mata Sahib Gurdwara in the Hazur Sahib area on the outskirts of Nanded, where Badal had arrived after visiting Takht Sri Hazur Sahib with his family.
According to preliminary information, the assailant attempted to stab Badal in the stomach but was stopped by security personnel. Police detained the attacker and launched an investigation.
Badal sustained an injury to his hand and was taken to a private hospital in Nanded for treatment. Police officials said his injuries were not life-threatening. He received stitches on his hand and was undergoing treatment, while further assessment of his injuries was being carried out.
A video recorded after the incident showed Badal walking with a saffron cloth wrapped around his right hand. His wife and Shiromani Akali Dal MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal was present when the attack occurred.
Inspector Santosh Kendre, who was deployed on special security duty, was also injured while attempting to prevent the assault.
Maharashtra Police confirmed that the attack occurred inside the gurdwara premises and that one suspect had been detained. Further investigation is underway.
Badal had travelled to Nanded from Punjab.
The incident comes months after Badal survived an assassination attempt outside the Golden Temple in Amritsar on December 4, 2024. He was unharmed in that incident, while the gunman was overpowered and arrested.
At the time, Badal was performing ‘sewadar’ duties at the Golden Temple after the Akal Takht had imposed ‘tankhah’ (religious punishment) on him and several other Shiromani Akali Dal leaders over alleged mistakes committed during the party’s tenure in Punjab from 2007 to 2017.
