Sitaram Yechury Passes Away

New Delhi, September 12, 2024 (Yes Punjab News)
Veteran CPI(M) leader and prominent political figure, Sitaram Yechury, passed away on Thursday at the age of 72. The senior politician had been undergoing treatment at AIIMS in New Delhi since August 19 for a severe pneumonia-like chest infection.

Sitaram Yechury’s Death Confirmed by Party Sources

News agency PTI confirmed the veteran leader’s death, citing both party and hospital sources. Yechury, who was a central figure in the Communist Party of India (Marxist), had been battling illness for several weeks. His health condition had been a matter of concern for the party, and his passing marks the end of an era in Indian leftist politics.

Condolences Pour In from Across the Political Spectrum

Following Yechury’s passing, several politicians expressed their condolences. Former Union Minister and BJP leader Rajeev Chandrasekhar said, “Saddened to hear about the passing of Sitaram Yechury, who was a colleague in Parliament with me some years ago. My deepest condolences to his family and supporters.”

Yechury’s death has led to an outpouring of grief from his colleagues, supporters, and political peers, all recognizing his contributions to Indian politics and his leadership within the CPI(M).

Yechury’s Health Condition Was Critical

Earlier reports indicated that Yechury had been placed on oxygen support, and his condition was being closely monitored by a multidisciplinary team of doctors at AIIMS. By Wednesday, his health had been classified as “critical but stable.” Despite the medical team’s best efforts, his condition deteriorated, leading to his passing.

CPI(M) Statement on Yechury’s Treatment

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) released a statement on Tuesday, providing an update on Yechury’s condition. The party confirmed that he was receiving treatment for an acute respiratory tract infection in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at AIIMS, New Delhi. The party also extended its thanks to the medical team caring for Yechury during his final days.

Yechury’s death is a major loss for the CPI(M) and for Indian politics, where he played a crucial role in shaping the left-wing movement.
