SGPC executive decides to maintain mercy petition of Balwant Singh Rajoana

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has strongly appealed to Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana, who is facing capital punishment in Central Jail, Patiala, to withdraw his decision to go on hunger strike.

During the special executive meeting under the leadership of SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami, it was also decided to intensify the struggle regarding Bhai Rajoana. In this meeting, the common opinion has been approved as per the recommendations made during the gathering of Panthic representatives held at the SGPC office yesterday.

Talking to the media after the meeting, SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami said that a letter was written by Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana to the SGPC regarding the withdrawal of mercy petition to the President of India in case of his capital punishment, on which the Panthic representatives gave the opinion that the Sikh body should not withdraw the petition. He said this petition was filed according to the Panthic sentiments and it is not in the interest of the community to withdraw it.

The SGPC President said that today’s executive meeting has also appealed to Bhai Rajoana to withdraw his decision to go on hunger strike from December 5, 2023, because it is not right to do so as per to Gurmat (teachings of Sikh Gurus) philosophy.

Harjinder Singh Dhami said that it has also been decided to intensify the struggle in the case of Bhai Rajoana. “In this regard, a big protest will be held from Gurdwara Sri Bangla Sahib to Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi on December 20, with the support of all the Panthic representatives.

Meanwhile, nearly 26 lakh proformas filled under the SGOC’s signature campaign for the release of Sikh prisoners will also be taken along during this protest. The Jathedar of Takhts, high priests, Sant Samaj, Damdami Taksal, Nihang Singh organizations, Kar Sewa leaders, panthic and political Sikh organizations, Singh Sabhas, farm unions, Nirmalas and Udasis will be gathered during the protest in New Delhi.”

He appealed to all Panthic parties and organizations to join this struggle which is the community’s common work. He also said that he would personally approach various representatives and motivate them to be a part of this protest.

Present in the meeting included, SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami, senior vice-president Harbhajan Singh Masana, junior vice-president Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa, general secretary Bhai Rajinder Singh Mehta, executive members Raghbir Singh Saharanmajra, Jasmair Singh Lachhru, Gurpreet Singh Jhabbar, Amarjit Singh Bhaliapur, Bibi Jaspal Kaur, Jaswant Singh Purain, secretary Partap Singh, OSD Satbir Singh Dhami, additional secretary Sukhminder Singh, Balwinder Singh Kahlwan, assistant secretary Gurdial Singh, Jaswinder Singh Jassi, Shahbaz Singh and in-charge Azaddeep Singh.
