The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Thursday demanded a high-level, High Court-monitored investigation into the attack on party president Sukhbir Singh Badal at a gurdwara in Nanded, seeking a probe into the alleged intelligence and security lapses as well as the conspiracy behind the incident.
Addressing a press conference in Chandigarh, senior SAD leaders Balwinder Singh Bhundar, Dr Daljit Singh Cheema and Arshdeep Singh Kler said the investigation should cover all aspects of the incident.
The leaders alleged that whenever the SAD was gaining political strength, “inimical forces” attempted to target its leadership.
They said the Nanded incident was not the first attack on Sukhbir Singh Badal and recalled the earlier attack on him inside the premises of Sri Darbar Sahib in Amritsar. The leaders claimed that had the earlier incident been investigated impartially, the latest attack could have been prevented.
The SAD leaders demanded that the previous Amritsar incident also be examined as part of the investigation into the Nanded attack, arguing that they believed the alleged motive and pattern were similar — to target Sukhbir Badal and weaken the SAD.
Dr Daljit Singh Cheema also criticised the Aam Aadmi Party and Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring for allegedly linking the attack with the Bargari sacrilege and Behbal Kalan police firing incidents.
Cheema accused AAP leaders, including Punjab Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan, of making what he described as irresponsible statements that could aggravate the situation.
He alleged that the AAP government had adopted a similar approach when Sukhbir Badal was attacked at Sri Darbar Sahib and accused it of attempting to provoke people and disturb the atmosphere in Punjab.
Cheema also criticised Raja Warring, alleging that he was supporting the AAP government’s position. He appealed to Punjabis to remain cautious of what he described as attempts to exploit the incident.
The SAD leader said his party had consistently stood for peace and communal harmony and would continue to do so.
