The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today asked chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh to identify close knit geographical areas with high COVID-19 frequency as hotspots and conduct aggressive testing in those areas even as it called for opening up of other areas gradually after taking due precautions to kickstart economic activity.
In a statement here, former minister Dr Daljit Singh Cheema said areas with high COVID cases should be identified geographically and not district wise. This is important as some districts are spread out length wise and in these districts it does not make sense to contain the entire district. “This is why only close knit areas having high COVID incidence should be identified and isolated for containment”.
Dr Cheema said there was an urgent need to go in for aggressive testing in COVID hotspots following reports that there were cases in which COVID positive cases were found to be asymptomatic.”Aggressive testing is not being done on the ground despite announcements. There is an urgent need for more testing kits to make this a reality besides raising medical infrastructure and safety standards for all front line workers”.
The SAD leader also stressed the need for gradual opening up of the economy in areas where no COVID cases had been reported for a stipulated time. He said migrant labour was under severe stress and soon they would leave the State for good if they were not given work.
He said similarly both skilled and unskilled workers should be encouraged to join work at their respective places by facilitating opening up of industrial units by removing all apprehensions in the mind of industrialists. He said simultaneously efforts should be made to take all needed health safety precautions to ensure the State did not suffer any set back while reopening its economy.
