Moga, October 25, 2024 (Yes Punjab News)
Moga Superintendent of Police (Headquarters) Gursharan Sandhu clarified on Friday that SHO Arshpreet Kaur Grewal, who is currently facing bribery charges, had never filed a complaint regarding alleged sexual harassment by DSP Ramandeep Singh. This statement comes amid a high-profile case in which Grewal, the Station House Officer of Kot Isse Khan Police Station, is accused of accepting a bribe to release drug peddling suspects.
Bribery Case Background
Inspector Arshpreet Kaur Grewal, along with two subordinates serving as ‘Munshis’, was booked for allegedly accepting a Rs.5-lakh bribe from a father-son duo who had been caught with 3 kilograms of opium.
The bribe was reportedly taken to allow the suspects to go free, leading to the suspension of Grewal and her team. Following the charges, Grewal took to social media to make counter-allegations against senior officers, including accusations of sexual harassment at the hands of DSP Ramandeep Singh.
SP Sandhu’s Clarification on Sexual Harassment Allegations
Speaking to the media, SP Gursharan Sandhu addressed Grewal’s claims, stating that she had not submitted any complaint or informed the Departmental Sexual Harassment Committee about facing harassment at her workplace. Sandhu, who is also the chairman of the committee responsible for investigating harassment allegations, emphasized that the department takes such complaints seriously but had not received any report from Grewal prior to her bribery-related suspension.
SP Sandhu further defended DSP Ramandeep Singh, praising him as an Olympian hockey player with a record of “good conduct” within the police force. “DSP Ramandeep has an unblemished record, and these allegations are being made without any formal complaint,” Sandhu noted, adding that the department’s protocols for harassment complaints are clear and were not followed in this instance.
Arshpreet Kaur Grewal’s Social Media Allegations
Following the bribery case, Arshpreet Kaur Grewal alleged that the charges against her were fabricated to shield DSP Ramandeep Singh and accused him of harassment at the workplace. Grewal also claimed that higher-ranking officials, including a former Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) and a Superintendent of Police (SP), had directed her to exonerate suspects in a murder case involving a prominent Congress leader, which she alleged to be part of a broader cover-up.
Grewal appealed to authorities, including the High Court, National and State Women’s Commissions, and the Punjab Chief Minister, seeking an inquiry into her allegations. She requested that her social media statements be taken as official testimony, fueling widespread debate on the integrity of her accusations amid the ongoing bribery investigation.
A Divisive Case With Complex Allegations
The case has become increasingly complex, with Grewal’s bribery charges now intertwined with her unverified claims of workplace harassment and misconduct by senior officers. As of now, the Punjab Police have not taken any official action on her harassment claims, with SP Sandhu’s statement indicating that these allegations lack formal documentation.
The bribery investigation into Grewal and her team continues, with the police expected to gather more evidence regarding the alleged bribery transaction and the release of suspects. The case has raised questions about transparency and accountability within the force, with public interest and scrutiny high due to the serious nature of the charges and counter-claims.
Focus remains on bribery allegations
With the Punjab Police maintaining that no formal complaint of harassment was filed, the focus remains on the bribery allegations against Arshpreet Kaur Grewal. The ongoing investigation will determine the validity of the charges and could lead to further developments as authorities shift through the conflicting narratives.
