In a strategic move to bolster prison management and reinforce administrative oversight within Punjab’s correctional facilities, the state government has transferred 18 police officers on deputation to the Punjab Jail Department.
This includes 3 AIGs, 5 SPs, and 10 Inspectors, marking a significant reshuffle aimed at improving law and order within the prison system.
The order was issued by Alok Shekhar, Additional Chief Secretary of Punjab’s Home Department, stating that these officers will serve in the jail department for one year or until further notice. Interestingly, all deputed officers have been assigned one rank above their current police designation.

Strategic Significance of the Move
With jails increasingly becoming hotbeds for organized crime coordination, mobile smuggling, and unrest, the appointment of senior-ranking officers is a preventive step toward enhancing surveillance, accountability, and discipline within the system.
Sources also mention that some of the officers included in the list were previously awaiting postings, while a few had been named in departmental inquiries, including bribery-related allegations. Deputation allows the government to optimize manpower while maintaining operational discipline during pending investigations.
The move underscores the Punjab government’s continued focus on jail reforms, inmate security, and administrative transparency in one of the most sensitive sectors of state governance.
