Punjab govt should announce Coronavirus Relief Package: Majithia

Former minister and senior SAD Bikram Singh Majithia today demanded that Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh announce a relief package for daily wagers to help them mitigate the financial crisis arising out of the Coronavirus pandemic.

While hailing the gesture of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath who announced to pay Rs 1,000 each to 15 lakh daily wage labourers and 20.37 lakh construction workers to help them meet their daily needs, senior legislator of the Shiromani Akali Dal S. Bikram Singh Majithia appealed to the Punjab CM to rise to the occasion and announce a similar package.

“The Coronavirus is a major attack on the economy due to which small entrepreneurs and the daily wage workers are the most affected. Sensing the gravity of the situation, Punjab government should immediately start transferring a sum of minimum Rs 3,000 per month into the accounts of unorganised labourers in rural and urban areas till the time the situation improves. Further, the government must also provide free ration to the needy people to share their financial burden”, said S. Majithia.

Expressing his concern for the widows, senior citizens and all other beneficiaries of social welfare scheme, the SAD legislator appealed to the chief minister to direct the officials concerned not only for clear the backlog but also for the disbursement of pensions one month in advance to mitigate their sufferings.

Reacting to the reports of fleecing in the name of shortage of hand sanitizers, S. Majithia asked the chief minister to ensure proper availability of the sanitizers and also direct the department concerned to keep a regular check on the menace.

Meanwhile, S. Bikram Singh Majithia also appealed to the people of Punjab to help the Centre and the State government to combat the contagious virus Covid-19 by following all the directions issued in this context, like maintaining social distancing and proper hygiene. “Precaution is paramount as it is the only option to stay safe” he added.EOM
