Mr. Vijay Dutt, Member of the Punjab State Food Commission, conducted a surprise inspection on Wednesday of various government schools in Block Kurali and Block Kharar of Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar district. The objective of the inspection was to assess the actual status of nutrition and food security schemes being implemented under the National Food Security Act (NFSA).
During the inspection, Mr. Dutt closely examined the quality of the Mid-Day Meal, cleanliness of kitchens, storage of food items, and overall hygiene arrangements.
He emphasized the necessity of regular health check-ups for Mid-Day Meal workers and issued appropriate directions to the concerned departments. On this occasion, he interacted with the children regarding the quality of food and also sat with them to have the meal.
Mr. Dutt directed that regular testing of drinking water quality must be ensured in all schools so that children are provided with safe and clean drinking water. He also instructed that the complaint/helpline number of the Punjab State Food Commission 9876764545 be prominently displayed at schools and Anganwadi centers.
After the inspection, Mr. Dutt stated that any negligence concerning children’s health, nutrition, and food safety would not be tolerated. Strict action would be taken against the concerned officials in case of any violation of rules.
Special Emphasis on Kitchen Gardens
Mr. Dutt laid special emphasis on establishing kitchen gardens in all government schools. He said that wherever sufficient land is available, kitchen gardens should be developed so that fresh, nutritious, and safe vegetables can be provided to children.
In this regard, he appreciated the well-developed kitchen garden at the Government Senior Secondary School, Kurali, congratulated the school staff, and described it as a model for other schools to follow.
He further stated that kitchen gardens not only improve nutritional standards but also help inculcate values of cleanliness, environmental awareness, and self-reliance among children.
