Petition challenging Agri laws should be filed in league with all farmers’ organizations: SAD

Chandigarh, October 6, 2020 (Yes Punjab News)

The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today said the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Lakhowal) decision to file a writ petition in the Supreme Court was ill advised and said a petition challenging the three Agri-marketing laws should be filed only after a consensus is reached on this issue amongst all ‘kisan’ organizations.

In a statement here, SAD leader Prof Prem Singh Chandumajra said as far as the SAD was concerned he wanted to make it clear that the party did not have anything to do with the writ petition filed by BKU (Lakhowal). He said Mr Ajmer Singh Lakhowal’s group did not consult the SAD before filing the writ petition.

Asserting the writ petition had been filed in haste, Prof Chandumajra said keeping in view the sensitivity of the issue, the BKU (Lakhowal) should have first consulted constitutional experts besides holding meetings with farm representatives in Punjab and Haryana as well as other parts of the country so that all views could be accommodated and represented properly.

Prof Chandumajra said as far as the party was concerned, it had already started reaching out to farm organizations so that everyone could be brought on one platform. He disclosed that he had visited Meham yesterday and interacted with prominent farm leaders at the Chaubisi Chabutra there.

He said the three member committee formed by SAD President Sukhbir Singh Badal including Balwinder Singh Bhundur, Sikander Singh Maluka and himself would also be meeting farmer organizations of Punjab shortly.

“Our effort is to reach out to farmer organizations and provide them whatever assistance they require in the ongoing fight against the black Agri laws enacted by the centre”, he added.
