The Additional Chief Secretary Development Viswajeet Khanna on Wednesday asked the Punjab Agricultural University Ludhiana to conduct a scientific study of in-situ Rapid Waste Decomposition Technology to rope in private players for developing a time-tested and viable mechanism to effectively check the menace of stubble burning.
Inspecting the demonstration trail of decomposition in the fields at village Majra near New Chandigarh in Mohali district, Viswajeet Khanna emphasized the need to develop ultra modern technology on scientific lines for efficacious disposal of crop residue.
He also asked the Commissioner Agriculture to pro-actively coordinated with PAU to evolve a long-lasting solution to this problem through innovative technology to the satisfaction of the state farmers.
He also expressed Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh’s concern to develop an effective technology to meet the challenge of stubble burning, which was being seriously coordinated and perused by the Chairman Farmers’ Commission.
Dwelling on the concept of the in-situ Rapid Waste Decomposition Technology, Khanna asked the Agriculture experts of PAU to meticulously study the pros and cons of this method before taking a final decision in this regard.
He also asked the PAU authorities to undertake trials in its demonstration farms to evaluate the success rate of this organic technology and submit a comprehensive report with their recommendations at the earliest.
Underscoring the need to develop a novel technology to stamp out environmental pollution, the ACS said that emerging technologies for in-situ management could be instrumental in resolving the menace of stubble burning to make our state clean, green and pollution free for ensuring healthy atmosphere for residents.
It was apprised at the demonstration that this is the first of its kind organic method, which breaks down difficult rice stubble within two weeks without moving and chopping the stubble.
It was further informed that the decomposed stubble could be easily mixed with the soil, reducing the added fertilizers required for the next crop up to 35 percent. The mixing of stubble in the soil or mulching also drastically slashing weed occurrence during the next crop besides supplementing the farmers with additional economic and other benefits.
The ACS was accompanied by the Commissioner Agriculture Balwinder Singh Sidhu, Director Agriculture Dr. Sutantar Kumar Airi besides several farmers were also present during the trial.
