Williamson to take part in SA20 season 2 after opting out of NZ’s central contract

kane Williamson NZ Cricketer

New Delhi, June 19 2024-

Kane Williamson has confirmed his participation in the SA20 season 2 in January 2025, after opting out of New Zealand’s central contract for the 2024-25 season. Despite this decision, Williamson has emphasised that his commitment to New Zealand cricket remains unwavering, dismissing any notions that his international career is nearing its conclusion.

Williamson explained that his decision was influenced by New Zealand Cricket’s (NZC) contractual stipulations. According to NZC rules, players must participate in the domestic Super Smash competition if not on international duty to be eligible for a central contract.

Balancing these commitments while exploring other competitive opportunities led Williamson to forego the central contract, though he is expected to miss only a handful of matches, including three ODIs and three T20Is against Sri Lanka.

“There’s a number of great competitions during that time, but SA20 looks really exciting,” Williamson told reporters upon his return to New Zealand after the T20 World Cup. “Unfortunately, it meant turning down a central contract. However, my priority still is, absolutely, playing for New Zealand. I might miss a handful of games over a three-week period. It’s simply the contract, the rules that currently exist meant I wasn’t able to have one but in terms of playing for New Zealand I’m not missing almost any cricket really, so that was important to me.”

Despite declining the contract, Williamson’s international calendar remains busy. He will participate in the World Test Championship (WTC) series against Sri Lanka and India away, a three-match home series against England, and an ODI series in Pakistan ahead of the Champions Trophy in February. There is, however, some uncertainty regarding his participation in the one-off Test against Afghanistan in September.

Looking ahead, Williamson and NZC CEO Scott Weenink have discussed the future, including the possibility of playing until the 2028 T20 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by New Zealand and Australia. Williamson, who will be 38 by then, remains non-committal publicly but acknowledges the allure of major events and significant series, such as the Test series in Australia in 2026-27.

“I want to play as long as I can,” Williamson stated. “I’ve really, really enjoyed my time captaining and it’s been a privilege and an honour to do that for a number of years. I’m excited about what’s next for the team in terms of the leadership as well and looking forward to being part of that. In terms of a timeframe, it’s difficult to say. I want to keep being fit, doing as well as I can, and keep trying to improve. That [2028] is a number of years away and it’s a year at a time. All major events and key series are things that whet the appetite and are an exciting prospect. Managing my time as well as I can after doing it for so many years is important and I know New Zealand Cricket are really supportive of that.”

Williamson remains committed to playing international cricket across all three formats, although his position in the T20 side may come under scrutiny as the team looks to rebuild following their group stage exit in the West Indies. “Naturally after major events, there are always different decisions that are made and you are always looking to bring different players through,” he said. “But being part of this team is so dear to me and I want to remain in that community as long as I can, and as long as I’m offering value.” (Agency)

India’s efforts in energy transition can be replicated by others: WEF

World Economic Forum WEF

New Delhi, June 20 2024-

The World Economic Forum has lauded India’s progress in global energy transition, observing that the country “is leading the way in creating outcomes that can be replicated elsewhere”.

“While innovation growth has slowed, countries like China and India are leading in developing new energy solutions and technologies,” it added.

India has been ranked 63rd on the WEF’s global Energy Transition Index released on Wednesday. Sweden tops the index, followed by Denmark, Finland, Switzerland and France among the top Five. China was ranked 20th.

Emerging and developing Asia, including populous nations like India and China, showed an 8 per cent improvement in their Energy Transition Index (ETI) scores over the past decade. The improvement shown by India and some other developing countries such as China and Brazil assumes significance as 83 per cent of countries have moved backwards from last year in at least one of the three energy system performance dimensions – security, equity and sustainability, according to the WEF report.

The WEF also highlighted the progress made by India in its clean energy infrastructure, with renewable energy and biomass comprising 42 per cent of its power generation capacity, making it the fourth-largest renewables market globally.

With annual investments nearing $10 billion, India is driving the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and the production of green hydrogen.

“However, the significant dependence on coal in both China and India continues to be a major factor in their emission intensity,” the report said.

The WEF also highlighted India’s focus on leveraging energy for income generation and supporting microenterprises through the productive use of renewable energy sources.

“There is also a strong emphasis on ensuring the affordability and economic viability of these solutions, underscoring India’s commitment to promoting sustainable energy practices that benefit local communities and drive economic growth,” it added.

It said the governments can also consider creating awareness and policy interventions, such as guidelines for energy-efficient built infrastructure and incentives for retrofitting, to shape an enabling environment for accelerated adoption.

“The developing world has an opportunity to rewrite the rules and show the way to successfully transform energy demand — an example of reverse innovation is frugal, scalable innovation originating in developed countries and then scaled across the world,” the report said.

While 107 of the 120 countries benchmarked in the report demonstrated progress on their energy transition journeys in the past decade, the overall pace of the transition has slowed and balancing its different facets remains a key challenge.

On the role of China and India, the WEF said that with roughly a third of the global population, these two countries will play a critical role. India’s per capita emissions, at 1.7 tonnes of CO2, are already 60 per cent lower than the global average of 4.4 tonnes of CO2 per capita.

Globally, the report said the energy transition to a more equitable, secure and sustainable energy system is still progressing but has lost momentum in the face of increasing uncertainty worldwide.

“However, there is still a need to decouple growth from energy demand. This requires significant investment in energy efficiency, particularly during the development of new infrastructure and manufacturing capacity,” the report observes.

At the same time, it points out that India has taken several initiatives in this regard. (Agency)

In colleges, public parks, inside local stadia and at other open-air places, scores of enthusiastic locals have been holding practice exercises for the last five days to join the Prime Minister at the Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC) on the banks of the famous Dal Lake in Srinagar city on June 21.

The likely participants include college/school teachers and students, civil servants, people representing social organisations, those coming from different vocations and places of the Valley, top bureaucrats and last but not least Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha.

These practice Yoga exercises start around 4 a.m. and continue up to 8 a.m.

The pleasant weather of the Valley has been a big encouragement for the Yoga practice exercises as the morning breeze helps the participants perform better during this physical and mental activity.

The sprawling lawns of SKICC are expected to accommodate over 7,000 participants who will join PM Modi to lead the celebrations on Friday.

‘Yoga for Self & Society’ is the theme for the 10th International Yoga Day and the message of physical and mental well-being towards a better future of the country is the underlying spirit of these celebrations.

Authorities have made attendance possible for such a large number of participants from different parts of the Valley by providing them transport and also night accommodation in Srinagar city for those belonging to far-off places.

“Every district of the Valley will be represented at tomorrow’s mega Yoga event at the SKICC and we are doing our best to ensure that the participants do not face any inconvenience,” said a senior official supervising the preparations for the mega event.(Agency)

supreme court SC

New Delhi, June 20 2024-

The Supreme Court on Thursday stayed the proceedings pending before various High Courts of the country pertaining to the alleged NEET (UG) paper leak.

Issuing a notice on transfer petitions filed by the National Testing Agency (NTA), a Vacation Bench presided over by Justice Vikram Nath ordered a stay on proceedings pending before different High Courts till the next date of listing.

During the course of hearing, the counsel representing NTA submitted before the Bench, also comprising Justice SVN Bhatti that High Courts were dealing with the pleas alleging various irregularities in NEET (UG) exam despite issuance of notice by the apex court in a similar transfer petition last week.

After hearing the submission, the top court ordered, “Issue notice returnable on 8th July, 2024….In the meantime, further proceedings before the High Court shall remain stayed.”

The batch of transfer petitions, along with other pleas seeking cancellation of the exam, will be heard next on July 8.

Earlier on June 14, the Supreme Court had issued notice on NTA’s plea seeking transfer of a petition pending before the Delhi High Court to the apex court.

Agreeing to examine NTA’s transfer plea, the top court had sought the response of the candidate who had instituted a writ petition before the Delhi HC alleging a paper leak in the NEET (UG) exam.

The issue relating to the grant of grace marks in the NEET (UG) exam has already been closed by the Supreme Court after the NTA submitted the scorecards of 1,563 candidates, who were awarded compensatory marks on account of the loss of time, had been withdrawn and cancelled.

These candidates were given an option to appear in a re-test to be held on June 23 or appear in counselling on the basis of actual marks obtained in the exam without normalisation. (Agency)
