Have submitted all relevant documents to ED: Actress Rituparna Sengupta after 5-hour interrogation

Rituparna Sengupta

Kolkata, June 19 2024-

Actress Rituparna Sengupta finally left the Enforcement Directorate (ED) office at Salt Lake here at around 6.30 p.m. after over five hours of questioning in connection with the multi-crore ration distribution scam in West Bengal and said that she had fully cooperated with the investigators.

“The ED officials had sought some documents from me. I have handed over those documents to them. They have cooperated with me just as I cooperated with them. The investigating officials are happy with my cooperation. I cannot make any further comment on the matter right at this moment,” she said before leaving the Central Government Office (CGO) complex where the ED office is located.

However, she refused to give any specific answer on the exact matters she was questioned on or what were the documents that she had handed over to the central agency officials.

She arrived at the ED office at 1 p.m. to join the probe and before that, her personal accountant reached there with files containing the paper documents.

The accountant claimed that since he handles the financial and accounting matters of the actress, he had also come to explain the matters to the investigating officials.

Sources said that the name of Sengupta surfaced while the central agency officials were examining the documents related to an accused corporate in the ration distribution case.

On May 30, the ED issued the first notice to Sengupta asking her to be present for interrogation on June 5. However, at that time the actress skipped the appearance on grounds that she was abroad then.

Subsequently, on June 6, she was served another notice by the ED, asking her to be present at the central agency office on Wednesday. This time, she appeared.

This is not the first time that Sengupta has been summoned by the ED. In 2019, she was summoned by the ED in connection with the multi-crore Rose Valley chit-fund scam.

She was summoned then for her involvement in some of the entertainment projects, including films, promoted by the Rose Valley Group. It was alleged that the films were produced using the money laundered by the Rose Valley Group through its various marketing schemes promising the investors lucrative returns. (Agency)

No patch-up with BJP, NDA govt will fall, INDIA bloc will bag power, says Thackeray

uddhav-thackeray

Mumbai, June 19 2024-

Shiv Sena-UBT President and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday said that the new NDA 3.0 will not last long and it will collapse soon owing to its own contradictions, while ruling out any possibility of a patch-up with the Bharatiya Janata Party.

“The NDA government will fall… We want it to fall, and mid-term Lok Sabha elections must be conducted. The INDIA bloc will win and come to power,” roared Thackeray at the party’s 58th Foundation Day.

Targeting the BJP, he said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is propped up by Nitish Kumar, of the Janata Dal-United, and Chandrababu Naidu, of the Telugu Desam Party, and all the three had indulged in calling each other names in the past.

“They (Nitish Kumar and Naidu) have made big promises to the Muslims and other sections in their respective states of Bihar and Andhra Pradesh. Is it all acceptable to the BJP and Modi… will they make their stand clear on it?” he demanded.

Countering the BJP’s charge that his SS-UBT had abandoned Hindutva and was getting only Muslim votes, Thackeray shot back, saying that “all patriotic people in the country had voted decisively for the INDIA-Maha Vikas Aghadi and SS-UBT, including Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Dalits, Buddhists, and other communities who love the country and to save democracy and constitution”.

“You question our Hindutva just because we allied with the Congress… But first look at yourself, how many of your allies speak of Hindutva? Are Nitish Kumar and Naidu Hindutvavadi by any yardstick?” he questioned.

“After the elections, you spread rumours that I am going to return to the NDA. I ask you all: Do you want to go back to those traitors who broke our party, took away the name and the symbol?” Thackeray asked, eliciting a thunderous no from the gathering.

Without taking names, he took a potshot at his estranged cousin and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena President Raj Thackeray for offering “unconditional” support to the NDA, “just because they didn’t want Uddhav Thackeray”.

Attacking Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, he dared him to fight the Assembly elections without using the late Balasaheb Thackeray’s name and photos, the Shiv Sena name and symbol, and contest on a different symbol, use his father’s pictures, and “then tell us your strike rate”.

Hitting back at Shinde for labelling the Opposition as “urban Naxals”, Thackeray said that those who break parties, misuse central investigating agencies, and scare the Opposition are the “urban Naxals”.

“The battle has begun, there’s no stopping till the final victory is achieved. We are waiting for the Supreme Court verdict on the disqualification issue… So far, it’s just ‘tarikh pe tarikh’ (date upon date) of hearings. I request the SC to tell us how long it will take to deliver its order. This is not a personal battle but a sincere effort to save the country’s democracy and the constitution,” he said.

On the Maharashtra Assembly elections slated for October, Thackeray said that he was confident that the MVA would be voted to power. (Agency)

This century is one of the top-3 centuries of my T20 career: Prabhsimran

Prabhsimran-Singh-Century-Celebration

Mohali, June 19, 2024 (Yes Punjab News)

The victory chariot of Trident Stallions continues in PCA’s Sher-e-Punjab T20 Cup. The team defeated Agri King’s Knights by 3 wickets to register their 5th consecutive win and made it to the top of the points table.

The star of this victory was Prabhsimran Singh, who ensured victory by playing a captaincy innings of 122 runs. Wickets were falling from one end, but the captain stood firm.

Prabhsimran Singh said about the innings that this century is very special for me because due to this our team won. I consider this century to be one of the top-3 centuries of my T20 career, because wickets were falling from one end.

I felt that wickets have to be saved as well as runs have to be scored. I believed in my ability and due to this we got the victory. In reply to Agri King’s Knights’ 184/7 runs, Trident Stallions scored 188/7 in 19 overs. Prabhsimran Singh scored 122 runs in this.

Prabhsimran hit 7 fours and 11 sixes in his 62-ball innings. He said that my plan was to stay on the pitch. We could not score runs in the powerplay because wickets fell. We only scored runs in the last over of the powerplay.

After wickets fall, it is the responsibility of the senior player to stay firm and play an important innings for the team. This does not put pressure on the youngsters and that is what I tried to do.

This match was challenging for the captain. He said that the way Agri King’s Knights were scoring runs, it seemed that the score would go above 200. Senior bowler Baltej Singh was injured, but Ramandeep handled the team well.

We stopped them before 200. After this Ramandeep also contributed in batting and the result was in front of everyone that we managed to win.

Prabhsimran Singh said that our effort is to not put pressure on the young players. You will see that the bowlers of the team are performing well. If we talk about Gurnoor Brar, he has got wickets in every match.

It is important that the balance of the team remains. If the bowlers are not used properly then there will be pressure on the batting.

When the score on the board is less than 200, then there is no pressure on the batting. Vihaan also got injured, so Manpreet was given a chance in his place. He is also a good player and the team has a lot of expectations from him.

Despite China’s criticism, US delegation meets Dalai Lama, pushes for Tibet’s autonomy

Dharamsala, June 19 2024-

In a significant show of diplomatic power politics, a high-level bipartisan delegation from the US, comprising ex-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and others, met Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama at the latter’s residence here despite criticism by China.

This move signals a potential escalation in diplomatic tensions as the US lawmakers asserted their stance on global human rights issues, pushing for the autonomy of Tibet within China.

“His Holiness Dalai Lama will live a long time and his legacy will live forever, but to you President of China, you will be gone and nobody will give you credit for anything,” said Pelosi, a long-time supporter of the Tibetan cause, while accusing China of not doing justice with Tibet.

Pelosi’s visit exemplifies solidarity and a commitment to global human rights, challenging Chinese policies.

Holding a copy of the Resolve Tibet Act, a bipartisan Bill to enhance US support for Tibet and promote dialogue between China and the Dalai Lama towards a peaceful resolution of the long-standing dispute, the Dalai Lama said, “The issue of Tibet is an issue of justice. It is not about a religious or political cause, but about the rights of the people to preserve their culture, language, and identity. The Tibetan struggle is a struggle for human rights and dignity.”

The copy of the Resolve Tibet Act was presented by the Congressional delegation led by Chairman Michael McCaul, Nicole Malliotakis, Gregory W Meeks, Jim McGovern, Ami Bera, and Mariannette Miller-Meeks, besides Pelosi, who were seen waving American and Tibetan flags.

The bipartisan delegation flew into Dharamsala on Tuesday to meet the 88-year-old Nobel peace laureate and other top officials of the Tibetan government-in-exile.

Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) President Penpa Tsering said, “Grateful for your instrumental leadership in sponsoring and ensuring the passage of the Resolve Tibet Act in the US Congress. We are just one step away from this becoming a law, which will significantly add value to the middle-way policy advocated by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the CTA.”

At the felicitation ceremony, Republican representative McCaul said the Bill reaffirms America’s support for the Tibetan right to self-determination.

“Just this week our delegation received a letter from the Chinese Communist Party, warning us not to come here… But we did not let the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) intimidate us for we are here today,” McCaul said.

Beijing, which considers the Dalai Lama a ‘separatist’, had said that it was seriously concerned about the visit of the US lawmakers to Dharamsala.

The US delegation visit came a day ahead of a planned trip by the Dalai Lama to the US to undergo medical treatment for his knees. However, his office told IANS that there will be no public engagement, including public audiences, of the Dalai Lama during the visit.

The Dalai Lama has been living in self-imposed exile in India since fleeing his homeland in 1959. (Agency)

2nd ODI: Mandhana, Harmanpreet, Vastrakar shine as India beat South Africa by four runs; win series 2-0

Bengaluru, June 19 2024-

Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and her deputy Smriti Mandhana slammed a century each and pacer Pooja Vastrakar bowled a superb final over as India Women defeated South Africa by four runs in a well-fought second One-day International that ended in a thriller and gave India an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Wednesday.

Mandhana struck a 120-ball 136, a century in her second successive match, and shared a 171-run partnership for the third wicket with Harmanpreet Kaur, who hammered an unbeaten 103 off 88 balls as India posted a massive 325/3 in 50 overs. Opener Shafali Verma (20), Dayalan Hemalatha (24) and Richa Ghosh (25 not out) were the other scorers for India as they made the most of the opportunity after being asked to bat first by South Africa.

South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt scored a run-a-ball 135 while Marizanne Kapp blasted a 94-ball 114 to keep South Africa in the hunt. But the visitors lost the way in the last couple of overs and were restricted to 321/6 in 50 overs as India won the match which is part of the ICC Women’s Championship.

South Africa were struggling at 67/3 at one stage before Kapp and Wolvaardt shared a superb partnership to not only revive the innings but also raise hopes of a victory in the high-scoring slugfest.

Chasing a massive 326, South Africa lost Tanzim Brits (5), Anneke Bosch (15) and Sune Luus (12) early and were struggling at 67/3 in the 15th over before Kapp and Wolvaardt came together to raise 184 runs for the fourth wicket partnership and take them to 251 when Kapp was out. The 34-year-old Kapp hammered 11 boundaries and three sixes as she rescued her team in the company of her skipper. Kapp reached her half-century off 53 balls and her century off 85 balls as she gained confidence.

Her departure to a catch by Vastrakar off Deepti Sharma, Wolvaardt, who completed her fifty off 69 balls and a hundred from 119 balls, kept South Africa in the hunt as they reached the final stage of the match needing 23 runs from the last 12 deliveries.

Nadine de Klerk blasted a six off Arundhati Reddy on the last ball as South Africa scored 12 runs off the 49th over. They needed 11 runs from the last six balls bowled by Vastrakar.

The Indian pacer kept her nerve despite being edged for a four by de Klerk, bringing the equation to 6 runs off four balls, as she dismissed Nadine off the third ball of the match, getting her to offer an easy catch to Arundhati at long-on. Vastrakar then struck a decisive blow by sending back Nondumiso Shangase, caught by skipper Harmanpreet. South Africa needed a six off the final ball of the match but Wolvaardt could manage only manage only two runs as India won the match by four runs.

Vastrakar finished with 2-54 while Deepti Sharma bagged 2-56 in her 10 overs. Smriti Mandhana took 1-13 to add to the century she struck.

Earlier, opener Mandhana etched her name in the annals of women’s cricket history by equaling former captain Mithali Raj’s all-time Indian record for the most centuries in women’s ODIs. Mandhana’s brilliant knock of 136 runs brought her level with the legendary Raj.

Following her century in the series opener, when she scored 117 runs, the flamboyant left-hander continued her superb form—her back-to-back centuries made her the first Indian woman to achieve this feat in ODI cricket.

The match began with a cautious start for Mandhana, who was kept quiet by the South African bowlers during the first powerplay. India lost opener Shafali Verma early, leaving Mandhana to anchor the innings. She meticulously built her innings, reaching 19 off 40 balls before shifting gears to dominate the bowlers. Her composed approach paid off as she reached her century in just 103 balls, eventually scoring 136 off 120 balls.

Mandhana’s knock was adorned with 18 boundaries and two sixes, showcasing her ability to both accumulate and accelerate runs. Her efforts propelled India past the 200-run mark inside the 40th over, setting a strong foundation for a formidable total.

Supporting Mandhana at the other end was captain Harmanpreet Kaur, who also slammed an 87-ball century. The duo’s partnership was crucial in maintaining the momentum and putting pressure on the South African bowlers.

However, Mandhana was dismissed in the 46th over scoring 136 of 129 deliveries, attempting to hit Nonkululeko Mlaba over the cover region.

Brief scores:

India Women 325/3 in 50 overs (Smriti Mandhana 136, Harmanpreet Kaur 103 not out; Nonkululeko Mlaba 2-51) beat South Africa 321/6 off 50 overs (Laura Wolvaardt 135, Marizanne Kapp 114; Pooka Vastrakar 2-54, Deepti Sharma 2-56) by four runs. (Agency)
