‘It was challenging’: Nicole Bolton reflects on balancing love and ambition in elite cricket

New Delhi, July 24 2024-

Former Australia cricketer Nicole Bolton shared the complexities she faced while balancing her relationship with fellow cricketer Elyse Villani and their competitive careers in the national setup.

Speaking on the ‘Stories After Stump’s’ podcast by cricket.com.au, Bolton opened up about the emotional and mental challenges of competing with Villani, her partner at the time, for an opening spot in the dominant Australian side.

Bolton, 35, who now serves as an assistant coach for South Australia and Adelaide Strikers, described the struggle of separating her personal relationship with Villani from their professional rivalry, revealing the strain it placed on both her mental health and their partnership.

“I really struggled with competing against each other and being able to disassociate between Elyse as my partner and Elyse as the cricketer. I think at times I made it quite challenging for our relationship, and that was probably through my own sheer ambitions to want to play at the highest level,” said Bolton.

Bolton’s journey in cricket was marked by significant highs and lows, from her impressive debut century in ODIs to an ongoing battle with depression.

“To me, it was quite simple: I wanted to be with Elyse, I loved Elyse and I needed to find ways where how I was feeling wasn’t impacting our relationship,” Bolton explained. “I’m at a point now where, Elyse has won a three-peat with Tasmania and I think that’s a freaking unbelievable achievement. She makes runs and I’m genuinely ecstatic for her, but back in those days – I’ll be honest – you want her to fail because you want to play, and that’s shit because you don’t want to feel like that for someone that you’re supposed to love.”

Reflecting on her journey, Bolton acknowledged the intense emotions she experienced during her playing days. “I look back on it now and, you know, I’m 35, but at 25 everything feels just so raw and it feels so intense that you’re not sure how to navigate it.”

Bolton’s struggles were not unnoticed by her teammates. Alyssa Healy, now the captain of the Australian team, witnessed the difficulties Bolton and Villani faced.

“It was almost hard to watch it all unfold. I think I felt for the both of them. Neither of them probably got the most out of themselves and their careers simply because that was always filtering away in the background. I definitely felt like ‘Bolts’ probably struggled and seemed to grapple with that a lot more, and probably let that affect her,” Healy said on the podcast. (Agency)

Study links kneecap shape to osteoarthritis risk

New Delhi, July 24 2024-

The shape of a person’s kneecap may indicate their risk of developing osteoarthritis – a common and debilitating joint disease, suggested a study.

Researchers from the Australian National University (ANU) in Australia focussed on potential differences in kneecap shape between men and women, given that women with knee osteoarthritis often experience more severe symptoms.

The team made use of CT scans to analyse the kneecaps of healthy individuals and patients awaiting knee replacement surgery.

They employed advanced image analysis techniques to create 3D models of the kneecaps and measured the surfaces’ shapes.

While the study “did not find distinct differences in kneecap shapes between sexes, it revealed that individuals with osteoarthritis exhibited more pronounced variations in kneecap surface shapes.”

These differences became more significant with increasing disease severity, said the team led by Associate Professor Laura Wilson from ANU.

She noted the unexpected nature of the findings, highlighting that the “changes in kneecap shape varied across different joint surfaces as osteoarthritis progressed.”

The study is published in the journal Osteoarthritis and Cartilage.

The researchers now plan to investigate whether these shape differences appear early in the disease’s development.

If the early onset of these changes can be confirmed, kneecap shape could potentially be integrated into disease prevention models, aiding in the early identification of individuals at higher risk for knee osteoarthritis.

This could lead to targeted early interventions for those at risk, the researchers said. (Agency)

‘Bridgerton 4’ to focus on Benedict Bridgerton’s love story

Los Angeles, July 24 2024-

The fourth season of the popular streaming show ‘Bridgerton’ will focus on the love story of Benedict Bridgerton, a perpetual bachelor.

Benedict, who is essayed by Luke Thompson, has taken a backseat in recent seasons but will now be the next Bridgerton sibling to find their soulmate, reports Variety.

The season will follow the events of Julia Quinn’s third ‘Bridgerton’ novel, ‘An Offer From a Gentleman’, which sees Benedict searching for a “lady in silver” he meets at a masquerade ball who turns out to be a low-born woman named Sophie Beckett.

As per Variety, in the ‘Bridgerton’ Season 4 logline that accompanied the announcement, Netflix confirmed that Benedict’s love interest is still that woman.

It read: “The fourth season of ‘Bridgerton’ turns its focus to bohemian second son Benedict (Luke Thompson). Despite his elder and younger brothers both being happily married, Benedict loath to settle down — until he meets a captivating Lady in Silver at his mother’s masquerade ball.”

When Variety spoke with new ‘Bridgerton’ showrunner Jess Brownell about the season 3 finale in June, she teased Benedict Bridgerton as the season 4 lead and broke down the decision to reveal his pansexuality during Colin (Luke Newton) and Penelope’s (Nicola Coughlan) season which is based on the fourth ‘Bridgerton’ book, ‘Romancing Mister Bridgerton’, and swapped places with Benedict’s story for the TV series.

“I knew that people out there had a feeling Benedict might be queer,” Brownell said. “And personally, it made sense to me. He’s not just open-minded, it’s that he seems like the type of person who wouldn’t be as concerned with gender, someone who might be more fluid and pansexual. He’s really attracted to someone’s spirit. And so it felt like we should make sense of those pieces that were in Seasons 1 and 2. That was what we were attempting to do with his storyline.” (Agency)

‘Olympian truce’ or stasis in France amid continuing political gridlock?

Paris-Olympics

New Delhi, July 24 2024-

It has been a fortnight-plus since the second round of the French parliamentary elections, and the country — on the surface — appears the same. President Emmanuel Macron is still in the Elysee Palace, Gabriel Attal is still Prime Minister, and National Assembly President Yael Braun-Pivet has been re-elected to the post. But appearances are deceptive.

The superficial calm hides the fact that the country is still without a government — with PM Attal in the post to handle day-to-day affairs. It is also likely to go without one till the end of the Paris Olympics in early August at least — as the President is not bound by any deadline for the formation of a new government.

Meanwhile, the deadlock persists in the National Assembly where none of the three major blocs is anywhere close to a majority on its own, and their widely divergent political orientations make any coalition virtually inconceivable.

In the process, the country may get more and more ungovernable as the divisions between the far right, Macron’s centrists, and the leftist coalition – which comprise the third-largest, second-largest, and the largest blocs in the Assembly but all well short of a majority — harden.

The far-right National Rally is still smarting from the “marriage of convenience” between Macron’s Ensemble and the left New Popular Front (Nouveau Front Populaire) in the second round, where both parties withdrew the weaker candidates to set up a one-to-one fight with it. This unprecedented tactical alliance seemed to have checkmated the Marine Le Pen-led party’s most serious bid for power after it put on a strong showing in the first round.

However, the collateral consequence will be that it is not going to be amenable to any compromise with either of its opponents.

On the other hand, the victory of Braun-Pivet of Macron’s party, over NFP challenger, communist Andre Chassaigne, which was achieved with the help of the Republicans, or rather, a faction of the rightwing party not allied to the National Rally, may be a morale booster for now but could queer its pitch ahead vis a vis the Left.

The political sleight of hand is not going to leave the Left happy as it deprives them of a key post in the hung chamber and is likely to prevent them from trusting Macron’s party for any further initiative.

On the other hand, the NFP, which was cobbled ahead of the elections and comprises a gamut spanning from hard-left (France Unbowed/La France Insoumise) to the communists and socialists to the Greens, and also having some Trotskyites, is also not a very homogenous bloc.

This week, it had proposed left-leaning economist Laurence Tubiana as its Prime Ministerial candidate but France Unbowed Jean-Luc Melenchon, which is the biggest component of the group, was not on board and wanted its own candidate. This disarray will work further to the advantage of Macron in not inviting it yet to form the government.

Another possibility mentioned is the formation of a non-party technocratic government, as was seen in neighbouring Italy under Mario Draghi (February 2021-October 2022) before Giorgia Meloni won the 2022 Assembly elections to become Prime Minister in her own right.

But in the episode, there is a point of caution. Draghi’s appointment came after the resignation of Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, whose stint in power was divided into two parts – one supported by a right-wing coalition, and the second supported by a centre-left coalition. And when the Draghi-led ‘national unity’ government fell, all the parties that were supporting it, fared badly in the polls. Meloni’s Fratelli d’Italia (Brothers of Italy), which had not supported the Draghi regime, was the chief beneficiary.

A technocratic government, which is generally resorted to when politically unpopular actions, such as austerity measures, need to be implemented, is unlikely to survive long in France as it can be removed by a simple vote of no-confidence and both the left and the right would not shrink from such a measure.

Eventually, the loser in the whole embroglio could be President Macron, whose major gamble in calling a snap parliamentary election after his party’s defeat to the far-right in the European Parliament elections in June, did not accomplish what he had envisaged. He had reportedly likened his move to throwing “an unpinned grenade at their (far-right’s) feet” but grenades can be notably unpredictable weapons and he and his party got a blowback.

His Ensemble could yet form the government — but at the sufferance of the National Rally, which would like to see its left opponents cool their heels out of power despite topping in numbers. However, the efficacy and longevity of such a government will remain suspect.

France seems poised for interesting political gymnastics after the Olympic flame is handed over. (Agency)

Macron says not to appoint new PM before end of Olympics

French-President-Emmanuel-Macron

Paris, July 24 2024-

French President Emmanuel Macron said that he will not pick a new prime minister before the end of the Olympic Games to avoid “disorder”, local media reported.

“This government has prepared the Games, and our responsibility is to make sure they go well,” Macron said during an interview with France 2 channel, adding that he has chosen “stability” to safeguard the Games, which gather nearly 10,500 athletes and millions of fans, Xinhua news agency reported.

As the change of the prime minister and the appointment of a new government would create “chaos,” Macron called on political parties to seek compromises in the country’s parliament in the absence of an absolute majority.

Gabriel Attal submitted his resignation as prime minister to Macron on July 8 after the ruling party failed to secure a majority in the snap legislative elections.

On July 16, Macron accepted Attal’s resignation but asked him to stay as the head of a caretaker cabinet until the formation of a new administration. (Agency)

Amarnath Yatra proceeding peacefully, another batch of pilgrims leaves for Valley

Jammu, July 24 2024-

The ongoing Amarnath Yatra has been proceeding peacefully since it started on June 29 as another batch of 2,907 pilgrims left Jammu’s Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas for the Valley on Wednesday morning in two escorted convoys.

“First escorted convoy carrying 1,134 Yatris in 41 vehicles left for north Kashmir Baltal base camp while the second escorted convoy carrying 1,773 Yatris in 62 vehicles left for south Kashmir Nunwan (Pahalgam) base camp. Both convoys left Jammu at 4.40 A.M. today”, officials said.

The cave shrine houses an ice stalagmite structure that wanes and waxes with the phases of the moon.

Devotees believe that this ice stalagmite symbolises mythical powers of Lord Shiva.

The cave is situated at an altitude of 3,888 metres above the sea-level in Kashmir Himalayas.

Devotees approach the cave shrine either from the traditional south Kashmir Pahalgam route or the north Kashmir Baltal route.

The Pahalgam-Cave shrine axis is 48 km-long and it takes Yatris four to five days to reach the shrine.

The Baltal-Cave shrine axis is 14 km-long and it takes one day for the pilgrims to have ‘darshan’ and return to the base camp. (Agency)
