Vaibhav Raj Gupta calls his grandfather ‘his first fashion icon’

Vaibhav Raj Gupta Actor

Mumbai, Aug 8, 2025
Aside from proving his mettle as a versatile actor with diverse performances in “Gullak” and “Mandala Murders”, Vaibhav Raj Gupta is also making a lot of heads turn with his fashion choices.

Vaibhav has revealed that fashion has always played a meaningful role in his life. Calling his grandfather his first fashion inspiration, he said, “He was an artist. The way he carried himself, the way he dressed — it was pure elegance. In his youth, he looked like Dilip Kumar, and as he aged, he reminded me of Al Pacino. Watching him taught me that fashion is about presence, not just clothing.”

Vaibhav added that for him, style is not about trends — it’s about energy, expression, and emotion.

As he was growing up, he used to emulate his grandfather’s effortlessly chic looks, and this early influence stayed with him over the years, invoking a deep admiration for icons in both Bollywood and sport.

Vaibhav’s fashion is influenced by Ranbir Kapoor, whom he admires for his easygoing charm; Vicky Kaushal, for his sharp minimalism; and Shah Rukh Khan, who, according to Vaibhav, “always carries himself with timeless grace.”

Coming to Hollywood, Vaibhav looks up to the breezy style sensitivities of Jake Gyllenhaal, Brad Pitt, and Benicio Del Toro.

In addition to this, Vaibhav called renowned footballer Lionel Messi a true fashion icon.

“The way he wears his jersey, his sneakers, his tattoos — it’s full of personality and quiet confidence”, Vaibhav noted.

Stating his personal definition of fashion, he added, “Fashion is not just about wearing good clothes. It’s about how you feel in them. Confidence, comfort, and authenticity — that’s what makes a look memorable.”

Work-wise, Vaibhav underwent a massive physical transformation to play Vikram Singh, a hardened cop in Netflix’s psychological crime thriller “Mandala Murders”.

He trained rigorously at the Yash Raj Films gym under the expert supervision of a fitness trainer.

His intense fitness regimen included at least three hours of training every day, with a minimum of 30 reps per set.(Agency)

India recorded over 15 lakh cancer cases in 2024: Minister

Cancer-Blocks

New Delhi, Aug 8, 2025
In 2024, India witnessed a surge in cancer cases, with over 15 lakh people diagnosed with the deadly disease, said Prataprao Jadhav, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, on Friday.

In a written reply to a query in Lok Sabha, Jadhav detailed the rising cases of cancer in the country.

“The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has informed that as per the National Cancer Registry Programme (ICMR-NCRP) Data, the estimated incidence of cancer cases in the country for 2024 is 15,33,055,” Jadhav said.

The incidence of cancer is rising steadily in the country – from 13.5 lakh in 2019 to 15.3 lakh in 2024. In 2020, 13.9 lakh cases were diagnosed. The cases spiked to 14.2 lakh in 2021, to 14.6 lakh in 2022, and 14.9 lakh in 2023, the Minister said.

He further noted that “8.2 lakh patients are estimated to have died of cancer in 2023 — the highest since 2019”.

In 2019, 7.5 lakh patients succumbed to the disease, and 7.7 lakh, 7.8 lakh, and more than 8 lakh died, respectively, in 2020, 2021, and 2022.

“The reasons for the increase in the number of estimated cancer cases are due to access and availability of improved diagnostic techniques for the detection of cancer, increased life expectancy, growing share of geriatric population, higher health consciousness, and improved health-seeking behaviour,” Jadhav said.

In addition, “there has been a significant increase in the classical risk factors associated with Communicable Disease (NCDs), including cancer such as tobacco and alcohol consumption, insufficient physical activities, unhealthy diets, consumption of high salt, sugar and saturated fats, etc,” the Minister explained.

To counter this, the government has undertaken the National Programme for Non-Communicable Diseases (NP-NCD).

The main aim of the programme is prevention and control of common NCD risk factors through an integrated approach and reduction of premature morbidity and mortality from cancer and other NCDs.

“The focus of this programme is on health promotion, early diagnosis, management, and referral of cases, besides strengthening the infrastructure and capacity building. The capacity building is provided at various levels of health care for prevention, early diagnosis, cost-effective treatment, rehabilitation, awareness, and behaviour change communication,” Jadhav said.(Agency)

Delhi CM intervenes to lift curbs on ethnic wear at Pitampura restaurant

Rekha Gupta Delhi CM 6

New Delhi, Aug 8, 2025
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday intervened in the matter of a north Delhi restaurant denying entry to a guest in traditional Indian wear on the grounds of not following the outlet’s ‘western dress’ code.

As the news of Pitampura-based eatery’s action reached Assembly premises, BJP’s Jangpura legislator Tarvinder Singh Marwah sought action against those who disrespected Indian ethnic clothes.

Marwah told IANS, “Whoever has done this must be punished according to the law. A salwar kameez is an Indian dress. No restaurant can refuse entry to guests for wearing it.”

After CM Gupta intervened and ensured that the restaurant lifted its dress code, she took to X to signal that all was well now.

“The operators of this Pitampura restaurant have accepted that they will no longer impose any restrictions based on attire and will welcome citizens coming in Indian attire. On Raksha Bandhan, they will also offer some discounts to sisters coming in Indian attire,” said the CM in a post, along with a smiley.

Her post on X was retweeted by Delhi Art & Culture and Tourism Minister Kapil Mishra, along with short videos of the owners of the restaurant in which they could be heard clarifying about the “misunderstanding” that inconvenienced a couple on August 3.

In one such video, Neeraj Aggarwal, director of the restaurant, said, “All guests in all dress code are welcome to our outlet. I invite people – whether from North India or South India – to our family restaurant and enjoy.”

The clarification came after the CM took note of the couple’s video on social media voicing their pain over the restaurant at the Metro Station stopping them from entering the premises.

“My wife was stopped at the entry gate while another guest in a mini skirt was allowed to enter,” complained the middle-aged man in the video.

Earlier, reacting to a social media post by the couple complaining against the restaurant, Mishra said on X, “This is unacceptable in Delhi… CM @gupta_rekha ji has taken serious note of the incident. Officials have been directed to investigate the incident and take immediate action.”(Agency)

India-Brazil can build new partnership, diversify trade partners: Brazilian researcher on Trump’s tariff tirade

India-Brazil Flags

Brasilia/New Delhi, Aug 8, 2025
A day after United States imposed additional 25% tariff on imports from India, bringing it at par with Brazil, a leading scholar reflected on its likely impact on global economic order and how the two nations – members of BRICs can come togther to cushion the impact.

In an exclusive conversation with IANS, Emilio Diaz, researcher from the University of Sao Paulo offered deep insights into the consequences of 50% tariffs, imposed by Trump administration on both nation and the two developing nations could come together to build new partnerships and give strength to respective economies by diversifying trade partnership.

This assumes significance in light of the fact that Brazilian President dialed Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, seeking to enhance ties in trade, technology, energy, defence and agriculture. He has also spoken about the need for BRICS nations to formulate a joint response to Trump’s tariff tirade.

Below is the full Interview:

IANS: Trump has imposed 50 per cent tariffs on India and Brazil. How will it impact the respective economies and world in general?

Emilio Diaz, Researcher, Sao Paulo University: I believe that the impact is little hard to estimate. I think that we can see some drop in GDP numbers mainly because of exports initially, but I feel that if the situation continues as it is with all the threat and after the position of tariff, I believe that we are having a lack of confidence in the American market as well as in other countries. This can have a further impact for our economies.

IANS: Should countries like India and Brazil aggressively now form a new economic world order, especially because the US has been acting unruly with tariffs?

Emilio Diaz: I believe that we are having a new world order in economy because United States is no longer the only powerful economy and this is the reason why they are doing all this.

I believe that we should, essentially, continue to do what we are doing but we don’t need to be aggressive. We can make partnerships, we can diversify the partners, intensify the economies among the BRICS countries as a whole.

We can deal with the United States as we are already doing, trying to negotiate, but not resisting also when it comes to sensible features of our countries because in Brazil for example, what they requested is to deliver to them, the independence of their republican power. This is not trade. This is interference in a sovereign country.

IANS: Indian PM and Brazilian President spoke to each other amidst all the tariff issues and showed support to each other. How do you look at it?

Emilio Diaz: I don’t believe that the countries right now are interested in having a direct confrontation, but I believe that we are already doing that in an indirect way. We have some manifestations already in Europe that this is not acceptable. We also have popular, public opinion on all countries because we are extremely connected nowadays.

IANS: India has categorically said that it will not give in before US pressure. How do you rate India’s response to the US?

Emilio Diaz: I’m not sure if the conditions were so clear in this sense. I feel that there is a difference in both cases. In case of India, this is not the first time that the United States threatened to impose tariffs.

IANS: Will India, Brazil and like-minded countries develop new markets for their products?

Emilio Diaz: Yes, this looks the likely way out.(Agency)

Cabinet okays Rs 30,000 crore as compensation to public sector OMCs for losses in domestic LPG

LPG cylinder Price

New Delhi, Aug 8, 2025
The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Friday approved Rs 30,000 crore compensation to three public sector Oil Marketing Companies (IOCL, BPCL and HPCL) for the under-recoveries incurred on the sale of domestic LPG.

The distribution of the compensation within the OMCs will be done by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. The compensation will be paid in 12 tranches, a Cabinet communique said.

According to the government, this significant step also underlines the commitment to protect consumers from volatility in global energy markets while maintaining the financial health of these PSU OMCs.

Domestic LPG Cylinders are supplied at regulated prices to consumers by the public sector Oil Marketing companies, namely, the IOCL, the BPCL, and the HPCL.

According to a Cabinet note, the international prices of LPG remained at high levels during 2024-25 and continue to remain high.

However, to insulate consumers from fluctuations in international LPG prices, the increase in cost was not passed on to consumers of domestic LPG, which led to significant losses for the three OMCs.

“Despite the losses, the Public Sector Oil Marketing Companies have ensured continuous supplies of domestic LPG in the country at affordable prices,” the Cabinet communique said.

This compensation will allow the OMCs to continue meeting their critical requirements, such as crude and LPG procurement, servicing of debt, and sustaining their capital expenditure, thereby ensuring uninterrupted supply of LPG cylinders to households across the country.

The move reaffirms the objective of ensuring the widespread availability of clean cooking fuel to all consumers of domestic LPG, including those under flagship schemes like PM Ujjwala Yojana, according to the Cabinet statement.

Meanwhile, at least 10.33 crore LPG gas connections have been distributed under the Pradhanmantri Ujjwala Yojna (PMUY) across the country (as of July 1).

The PMUY, launched in May 2016, aims to provide deposit-free LPG connections to 8 crore women from poor households across India, which was achieved by September 2019.(Agency)

Drone seized on India-Pakistan border in Jaisalmer ahead of I-Day

Drone

Jaipur, Aug 8, 2025
Days before Independence Day celebrations, security agencies have recovered a drone on the India-Pakistan border in Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer district.

The drone was seized from a location just 20 km from the International Border, in an uninhabited area of Sector South of Jaisalmer, on Thursday evening.

Sources said ‘Made in China’ is written on the drone, though no official statement has yet been issued by the BSF or local police, said sources on Friday.

The discovery comes amid heightened security along the border. Authorities are investigating when and how the drone reached the spot — whether it fell recently or had been sent earlier.

Jaisalmer Police and BSF are jointly probing its range, feed, and controlling source. A technical examination is also underway to determine the type of camera and equipment installed. Given existing restrictions on civilian drone flying in border areas, agencies suspect it may have been used for spying.

This is the third major security alert in Rajasthan’s border areas within a week.

Four days ago, security forces in Sriganganagar recovered a heroin packet weighing over half a kilogram, valued between Rs 2.5 and Rs 3 crore.

Three days ago, police arrested Mahendra Prasad, a resident of Uttarakhand, near the DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation) centre in Jaisalmer. Posted at the DRDO guest house, he had been under suspicion for a long time and is now accused of spying for Pakistan. He has been shifted to Jaipur for interrogation.

Officials point out that after Operation Sindoor, Pakistan has intensified drone-based activities near the Rajasthan border, prompting agencies to maintain heightened vigilance. Due to this, security agencies have become more alert about drone flying and other spying attempts here.

The latest recovery underscores ongoing threats from cross-border smuggling and espionage operations, said officials. And security has been heightened around key Defence installations, and all movements in border areas are under tight surveillance.(Agency)

Natashaa Fernandes opens up about staying aloof on the sets of ‘Andaaz 2’

Natashaa Fernandes Actress

Mumbai, Aug 8, 2025
Natashaa Fernandes has opened up about her decision to keep a distance from others while shooting for her film “Andaaz 2.”

The actress shared her reasons for maintaining distance from everyone on the sets. Speaking about the challenges of her role, Fernandes shared, “There were ample challenges, which I was keen on overcoming. Since I am the negative lead, I used to maintain distance from everyone and live in my bubble of emotions on days when I had a major scene.

“The reason I address it as a challenge is many times I used to be misunderstood by many. They’d generally feel I was too reserved as a person and someone who’d avoid social interaction. Being on set I preferred to be focused and live the life story of Priyanka, I had to be true to my purpose. In order to become her I knew I had to make some sacrifices be it making jokes with co-actors or mingling elsewhere.

However, that was never the case, I strongly believe every actor has a personal method and approach and prefers their space which once expressed should be respected.”

The actress shared that she had to navigate deep emotional preparation to portray the role. Natashaa explained, “Acting is a process and a very personal experience. Although we did have workshops before filming, I believe that set up helped me understand and get to know my co-stars better. However, the emotional journey I went through to live the life of the character Priyanka was still achievable.”

“This particular character had a very interesting emotional graph that involved multiple highs and lows of life. For any scene that involved negative emotions I had to channelize that emotion from a place of deep hurt, from an unhealed version of myself or life experiences that had the worst of me, hence it wasn’t easy emotionally while I was living the life of Priyanka!.”

Talking about her look and role, she added, “The character Priyanka is a young lady who had the responsibility of her family at a tender age. She eventually sacrificed her happiness to establish a business in order to provide for her loved ones.

On her journey to success, she didn’t have time to fall in love or develop any friendships hence leading a lonely life! She carries herself with grace in every situation that life throws in her direction. She is a powerful boss lady she still has a vulnerable side to her which is eventually taken advantage of leading to resentment.”

On a related note, “Andaaz 2,” directed by Suneel Darshan, also stars debutants Aayush Kumar and Aakaisha. It is the sequel to the 2003 film “Andaaz.” The film hit theatres today, August 8.(Agency)
