Jammu, Feb 12, 2026
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said on Thursday that since the NC government took office in 2024, a total of 1,425 illegal structures were demolished across the Union Territory.

In a written reply to a starred question by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) MLA Mir Mohammad Fayaz in the Assembly, Omar said that a total of 1,425 illegal structures, including residential, have been demolished across Jammu and Kashmir since the formation of the National Conference-led government in October 2024.

The demolished properties included the house of journalist, Arfaz Ahmad Daing in Jammu and the government said that due procedure under the J-K Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Act, 1988, and other relevant laws was followed prior to the action.

On the demolition of the journalist’s house by the Jammu Development Authority, Daing, in his written statement on November 19, 2025, had stated that he has no connection with the said land or property.

“The demolition drive was conducted only after due verification from the concerned revenue authorities and after following due procedures,” the Chief Minister said.

Asserting that no construction is permitted without proper authorisation, Omar said demolition drives are carried out only after verification by revenue authorities concerned and in accordance with due process.

The demolished structures included 1,194 residential and 231 commercial buildings, with the highest number of 1,133 structures being in Srinagar including 119 commercial establishments brought down by the J-K Lake Conservation and Management Authority, Srinagar Municipal Corporation and Srinagar Development Authority.

Omar, who is also minister in-charge Housing and Urban Development, said Jammu district recorded 237 demolitions, including 75 commercial structures, carried out by Jammu Development Authority, Jammu Municipal Corporation and revenue authorities followed by 19 in Ramban district by National Highway Authority of India, 10 in Anantnag by Pahalgam Development Authority, seven in Kathua and four in Shopian.

He said three structures each were demolished in Kulgam, Ganderbal and Udhampur, two in Budgam and one each in Baramulla and Kupwara districts. The commercial property in Baramulla and three houses in Ganderbal were demolished on the directions of the high court.

“The encroachments are regularly removed as per the provisions of J-K Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Act, 1988 and other relevant laws. Any unauthorised construction is dealt under rule, as per the provisions of Control Of Building Operations (COBO) Act, 1988. This is done on a regular basis by way of service of notices, conducting sealing and anti-encroachment/demolition drives,” the Chief Minister said.

He said adequate time is accorded to the violator or encroacher as per the relevant section of J-K Public Premises Act and COBO Act. Asked about the reasons for permitting construction of such structures in the first place, no such construction is permitted, without proper permission.

“However, in some cases, due to legal intervention, lack of timely police assistance, construction at odd hours and deviation from approved plans, delay occurs, due to which the offender succeeds in raising construction to the next level,” Omar said.(Agency)

Rolls‑Royce to scale up India operations, eyes co‑development of combat jet engine

PM Narendra ModiCEO of Rolls-Royce Tufan Erginbilgic

New Delhi, Feb 12, 2026
Luxury car manufacturer Rolls-Royce on Thursday said it intends to scale up its business in India to support future programmes and partnerships across defence, civil aviation and energy.

The automaker is exploring opportunities to co‑develop a next‑generation combat jet engine and localising engine manufacture for the Indian Army, Navy as well as Coast Guard, and potentially power solutions for critical infrastructure and industry, a statement said.

These initiatives could more than double the workforce supporting Rolls‑Royce and its partners to about 10,000 people in India.

“As India advances its next generation military capabilities, Rolls-Royce with the UK Government has offered to co-develop a 120 kN class combat jet engine core that could be India’s fastest route to an indigenous next-generation engine,” the statement said.

Rolls Royce highlighted that the co-development will provide full technology transfer with IP ownership for India, supported by a dedicated design complex and manufacturing capabilities that will unlock significant job creation.

The company also estimated a ten‑fold increase in its supply‑chain sourcing from India, which would benefit many small and medium sized enterprises.

“We are determined to partner India on its Atmanirbhar journey, by developing indigenous propulsion capabilities, providing sustained power to critical infrastructure and industry, and expanding local manufacturing for global supply chains,” said Tufan Erginbilgic, CEO, Rolls‑Royce.

“As we grow our participation in programmes across India’s defence, aviation and energy sectors, we will expand our ecosystem in India, as we have done successfully in other countries,” Tufan added.

Over 1,400 Rolls-Royce engines are currently powering various defence platforms such as the Jaguar combat aircraft and Hawk trainers of the Indian Air Force and Navy; the Arjun Main Battle Tanks of the Army, and a variety of vessels and submarines of the Indian Navy and Coast Guard including the Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Watercrafts and the P17 Alpha frigates, the company said.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Erginbilgic, saying that the government welcomes the luxury automaker’s enthusiasm towards scaling up its activities in India.

“We welcome Rolls-Royce’s enthusiasm towards scaling up its activities in India and partnering with our innovative and dynamic youth,” PM Modi said in an X post.(Agency)

T20 WC: BCB chief Animul Islam to attend India vs Pakistan match in Colombo

New Delhi, Feb 12, 2026
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) chief Animul Islam has confirmed that he will travel to Colombo on February 15 to watch the high-voltage T20 World Cup 2026 clash between archrivals India and Pakistan at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Thursday.

The BCB chief has also informed that representatives from all five major Asian teams, including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka, will be present and engage in a dialogue.

Speaking to the Bangladesh newspaper Pratham Alo, Islam said the invitation for the match has come from the ICC and is part of a broader plan to bring all the stakeholders together.

“The ICC has made a decision. The major stakeholders of the ICC are these five Asian countries. For the India-Pakistan World Cup match on the 15th, they want representatives of all five Asian countries to be present at the ground together, watch the match together, and talk to one another,” he said.

The development came after the relations between the Indian cricket board (BCCI) and the BCB deteriorated after BCCI asked Mustafizur Rahman to be released from the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL. In retaliation, BCB requested the ICC to shift the matches from India to Sri Lanka, but the governing body rejected the request, which led to Scotland replacing Bangladesh in the multinational tournament.

However, the ICC and BCB engaged in positive talks after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) decided to boycott the India match in solidarity with Bangladesh’s removal from the tournament.

After the talks, the ICC decided that no action would be taken against Bangladesh for refusing to adhere to the T20 World Cup schedule, while Pakistan agreed to play their match against India.

It is also decided that Bangladesh will host an ICC event between 2028 and 2031, which Animul expects to be the ICC Men’s Under-19 World Cup in 2028.

Islam said the board will prepare a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to ensure that the assurances are fulfilled.

“We will also enter into an agreement. The agreement will be line by line, an MoU-type document, so that there is no uncertainty,” said Islam. “You know that earlier, when we held the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Annual General Meeting in Dhaka, a similar issue arose. There as well, we prepared an MoU-type document so that no one could ever deviate from the contract in any way,” he added.(Agency)

Man kills two neighbours on suspicion of witchcraft in MP’s Singrauli, arrested

Murder Crime

Singrauli, Feb 12, 2026
A man, who could not become father after his wife suffered a miscarriage, allegedly killed two of his neighbours on Thursday, accusing them of practising witchcraft in Madhya Pradesh’s Singrauli district, police said.

The shocking incident was reported in a remote Antarwa village under the Jeyawan police station area.

The accused identified as Chhatrapati Singh, a tribal, was upset as he couldn’t become father.

According to police, Chhatrapati alleged that his inability to become a father was due to his neighbour’s witchcraft.

On Thursday, the accused organised a prayer at his home and invited his neighbours, including Kewal Singh and his wife Phulmati.

Police said that when Kewal along with his wife Phulmati reached there, Chhatrapati attacked them with an axe all of sudden. Some neighbours tried to intervene, however, a furious Chhatrapati attacked them also, and then locked himself in room. Kewal and Phulmati died in the attack.

Meanwhile, learning about the incident, the police team reached the spot and arrested the accused and initiated an investigation into this horrific crime.

Police said the investigations so far have revealed that the accused’s wife had suffered a miscarriage.

“Chhatrapti suspected that his neighbours were doing some witchcraft, which is why his wife suffered a miscarriage and he could not become father. Therefore, he invited them on the pretext of a prayer of their deity at his home and killed them,” Singrauli Superintendent of Police (SP) Manish Khatri said.

Khatri also stated that some materials used in puja were found at the scene, raising suspicions that the murders were motivated by witchcraft.

During the investigation, police also found a mud platform ‘chabutara’ outside his house two days earlier and said he would perform a puja there on Thursday.

Khatri further said that prime-facie it appears that crime occurred due faith on witchcraft, but it also appears it was planned.

“Police are investigating the case thoroughly. A forensic team has collected necessary evidence from the scene and further investigation is underway,” he added.(Agency)

Rajya Sabha MP Rajinder Gupta Seeks ₹10,000-Crore Package for Mohali Semiconductor Lab

Rajya Sabha MP Rajinder Gupta in Parliament 1

Punjab/Chandigarh, 12 February, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Participating in the discussion on the Union Budget in the Rajya Sabha, Member Parliament Padma Shri Rajinder Gupta described the Budget as fiscally prudent and growth-oriented, but argued that India’s march towards becoming the world’s third-largest economy must be anchored in stronger public expenditure on education and healthcare.

Thanking the Chair for the opportunity to speak, Gupta congratulated the Finance Minister on presenting her ninth consecutive Budget, calling it a symbol of stability, continuity and the rising leadership of women. Referring to Punjab as the land of “gurus, pirs and prophets” guided by the spirit of sarbat da bhala, he said the true test of any Budget lies in how it treats the poorest and most vulnerable.

Gupta welcomed the government’s emphasis on fiscal discipline, noting the projected fiscal deficit of 4.3 per cent and capital expenditure outlay exceeding ₹12 lakh crore as steps aligned with the vision of “Viksit Bharat”.

He also appreciated tax reforms aimed at ease of doing business, measures to support domestic pharmaceuticals, enhanced allocations for women-centric schemes, and the recently concluded India–EU trade deal, which he termed a landmark achievement.

However, he cautioned that sustained economic growth must be accompanied by greater public investment in education, healthcare and infrastructure. “To match and surpass global economic powers, per capita income must rise equitably and the everyday lives of farmers, workers, women, senior citizens and youth must visibly improve,” he said.

Education and employability

Gupta noted that while the Budget allocation of over ₹1.39 lakh crore for education reflects positive intent, overall spending remains between 4.1 and 4.6 per cent of GDP — below the 6 per cent target envisioned in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. He expressed concern over rising fees, closure of over 90,000 schools in recent years, and declining public confidence in government schools.

Arguing that commercialization weakens the spirit of Article 21A, which guarantees the right to education, he called for the establishment of an independent education commission to ensure affordability and curb profiteering.

He also proposed centres of excellence within government schools, accountability mechanisms to encourage public servants to enrol their children in government institutions, and the creation of Education–Employment–Enterprise (EEE) clusters to bridge the degree-skill mismatch and address youth unemployment.

Healthcare spending ‘critically low’

On healthcare, Gupta acknowledged the expansion of allied health institutions, support for Ayurveda and medical tourism, and relief provided under Ayushman Bharat. However, he said India’s public health expenditure at around 1.9 per cent of GDP remains inadequate in the face of rising population, disease burden and longevity.

He warned that weak public systems push families towards high out-of-pocket expenses, often leading to debt. He urged the government to undertake emergency strengthening of public healthcare infrastructure, extend full tax incentives to hospitals in underserved regions, and widen coverage and improve reimbursements under Ayushman Bharat.

Senior citizens, women and MSMEs

Highlighting the contribution of nearly 15 crore senior citizens above the age of 60, Gupta requested that senior citizens of India be provided with reasonable relief in rent and taxes, and that they be given higher and safer interest on their bank deposits, to ensure a respectable and self-reliant income.

On women’s empowerment, he said schemes such as Lakhpati Didi and SHE-Marts were promising but stressed the need for structural reforms, including safe workplaces, childcare support, land rights and mandated government procurement from women-led enterprises.

Turning to MSMEs, which employ over 11 crore people, Gupta said access to patient, long-term capital remains a challenge. He called for the creation of a strong development bank to support long-term industrial growth, arguing that “a long-term vision cannot be financed with short-term money”.

Push for semiconductor investment in Punjab

Focusing on Punjab’s industrial potential, Gupta said strengthening sectors such as semiconductors, textiles and advanced manufacturing could curb youth migration. He referred to the Semiconductor Laboratory (SCL) in Mohali, India’s only government-owned semiconductor Lab and urged the Centre to announce a special package of ₹10,000 crore to establish a fully modernised semiconductor fabrication facility there.

“This is not merely Punjab’s demand; it is a question of India’s technological self-reliance,” he said, adding that Punjab has consistently stood with the nation and deserves priority support.

Concluding his speech, Gupta said economic policy must ultimately translate into tangible benefits in classrooms, hospitals, farms and homes. “When welfare reaches every life equally, trust deepens — and the promise of inclusive growth becomes real,” he said.
