Senior Punjab Congress leader and former MLA Dr. Navjot Kaur Sidhu on Saturday stated that her husband, former MP and ex-Cabinet Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu, will return to active politics only if he is officially declared the Congress Chief Ministerial candidate for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.
Speaking to the media after meeting Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, Dr. Sidhu said that both she and her husband are committed to restoring Punjab to its former glory as a “golden state”, but emphasised that they refuse to engage in any form of financial dealings for political elevation.
Responding to a question on whether any political party had approached them for money, she made a sharp remark:
“One is made a Chief Minister only if he hands over a Rs 500-crore briefcase. We can deliver results, but we don’t have money.”
Dr. Sidhu clarified that Navjot Singh Sidhu is currently content with his professional life and would not re-enter politics unless the party announces him as the CM face. She added that Sidhu’s connection with the Congress remains strong, particularly due to his long-standing rapport with Priyanka Gandhi.
However, she expressed doubt that the faction-ridden Punjab Congress would ever project Sidhu as its chief ministerial candidate.
According to her, “Congress already has five leaders who want to be CM, but all of them are working against the party’s interests.”
She indicated that the final decision rests with the Congress high command, but she does not foresee the leadership taking such a step under the current circumstances.
“If any party empowers Sidhu to fix Punjab, he will deliver and turn the state into a golden state again — but we do not have money,” she reiterated.
When asked about the possibility of Navjot Singh Sidhu returning to the BJP, Dr. Sidhu said she could not speak on his behalf, leaving the question open-ended.
