The North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) has expressed deep concern over the case of Harjinder Singh, a Punjabi truck driver involved in a tragic accident in Florida. NAPA has formally appealed to India’s Union External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar, urging the Ministry of External Affairs to intervene and ensure fair treatment for Singh.
In a letter addressed to the Minister, Satnam Singh Chahal, Executive Director of NAPA, emphasised that Harjinder Singh and his family must not be left alone in this critical time.
“The accident was an unfortunate incident, and while due legal process will take its course, it is essential that Singh’s rights are protected, and that he receives all possible assistance from the Indian government,” Chahal said.
NAPA highlighted that thousands of Punjabi truckers in the United States form the backbone of the logistics and supply chain industry, and incidents like these have created fear and uncertainty among the community. “We appeal to the Ministry of External Affairs to provide consular support, legal guidance, and ensure justice is not denied to Harjinder Singh,” Chahal added.
The association further warned that recent moves such as freezing or restricting work visas for foreign truckers, in response to such accidents, could have catastrophic effects on Punjabi families who have built their livelihoods in the United States. NAPA urged both the Indian and U.S. governments to work together to balance road safety with fair treatment of immigrant workers.
“This is a humanitarian appeal. We stand with Harjinder Singh and request the honorable External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar to take this matter up with the U.S. authorities at the earliest,” said Chahal in the statement.
