Dr. Vikramjit Singh Sahney raised serious concerns in Parliament regarding inadequate storage capacity at FCI godowns and the acute shortage of jute bags in Punjab, both of which are severely impacting foodgrain procurement in the state.
Dr. Sahney stated that around 20 million tonnes of old stocks of paddy and wheat are still lying in FCI godowns, a problem that had already emerged as early as November last year due to the failure to evacuate stocks in time. he emphasised that this is directly affecting fresh procurement, particularly during the current procurement season.
Dr. Sahney also highlighted the acute shortage of jute bags, noting that procurement cannot function smoothly without assured packaging availability. Given the urgency, he suggested that the Government explore alternatives such as PP (polypropylene) bags to ensure uninterrupted procurement while maintaining storage and quality norms.
Dr. Sahney stressed that unless immediate and coordinated measures are taken on stock evacuation, storage planning, and bag availability, procurement operations will continue to face avoidable bottlenecks—ultimately impacting farmers’ interests and national food security.
