In a deepening investigation into a Disproportionate Assets case, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau has now taken senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader and former minister Bikram Singh Majithia to Majitha for further questioning. This development comes just a day after officials escorted him to Mashobra in Himachal Pradesh, where he is suspected to hold undisclosed property interests.
Sources revealed that the Vigilance Team has left Mohali and Majithia was being taken for a on the spot investigation of his premises in his presence.
Majithia, who was arrested on June 25 from his Green Avenue residence in Amritsar, remains in seven-day vigilance custody. His dramatic arrest — which included a confrontation with the vigilance team and was streamed live on his social media — has since become a lightning rod for political debate in Punjab.
Previously on bail in an NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) case, Majithia now faces fresh scrutiny under a new FIR lodged by the Vigilance Bureau concerning alleged disproportionate assets. He was first taken to the bureau’s Mohali office, presented in court the next day, and remanded to custody.
The arrest has sparked a fresh political storm. The AAP-led Punjab government has framed it as part of their crackdown on corruption and substance abuse networks, calling it action against a “big fish” under the ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’ campaign.
However, Majithia’s party, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), has denounced the move as politically motivated. While neither Congress nor the BJP has shown overt support for Majithia, both parties have criticized the manner in which the arrest was conducted.
As the investigation unfolds, all eyes remain on the developments in Majitha, with further legal and political repercussions expected in the coming days.
