Laljit Bhullar Stresses Time-Bound Disposal of Hit-and-Run Compensation Cases

Punjab Transport Minister S. Laljit Singh Bhullar has directed all districts to expedite the disposal of pending compensation cases related to Hit-and-Run accidents (in case of unidentified vehicles) from the years 2022 and 2023, ensuring disbursement by March 2026.

Chairing the Orientation-cum-Training Programme for SAS Nagar, Fatehgarh Sahib, Rupnagar and SBS Nagar at the District Administrative Complex, Mohali, the Minister said that Sub Divisional Magistrates (SDMs) must complete scrutiny of cases within one month, while District Committees, headed by Deputy Commissioners, should clear the cases within two weeks thereafter.

He reiterated that compensation of Rs 2 lakh in case of death and Rs 50,000 for grievous injury is admissible under the scheme and emphasized that all pending cases must be processed on priority by completing requisite formalities.

Explaining the procedure, the Minister said that families of victims should submit applications along with required documents to the concerned SDM-cum-Claims Enquiry Officer of the accident area. After verification, the SDM will forward the case to the District Committee led by the Deputy Commissioner-cum-Claims Settlement Commissioner, which will then transmit the approved claim to the Nodal Officer of the designated Insurance Company.

The Minister categorically clarified that the claim process under the Hit-and-Run Compensation Scheme is very simple, transparent and completely free, and there is absolutely no requirement of any middleman or agent. Victims’ families can submit their claims directly to the concerned SDM office without any intermediary.

He further informed that mandatory documents to be attached with Form-I including Copy of claimant’s bank passbook with complete details, Cashless treatment bill, if applicable, Identity and address proof of the victim and claimant, Copy of Police FIR, Post-mortem report and death certificate in case of death, or injury report, as applicable

Highlighting ongoing efforts to reduce road accident fatalities and ensure timely compensation, the Minister said that the Lead Agency on Road Safety, functioning under the Punjab State Road Safety Council, is conducting district-wise orientation and training programmes to address pendency issues.

It was informed that currently around 3,300 death cases and 1,500 grievous injury cases pertaining to 2022 and 2023 are pending for settlement. Transport Minister also released an awareness

Venkatratnam, Director General, Lead Agency on Road Safety, Deputy Commissioner Ms. Komal Mittal, Joint Director (Administration), Lead Agency on Road Safety, Paramjit Singh, NGOs Avoid Accident (Harpreet Singh) and Arrive Safe (Harman Sidhu) along with SDMs, SPs/DSPs and Regional Transport Officers, District Attorneys (Prosecution) and Civil Surgeons of the concerned districts.
