IPS Dr. Sagar Preet Hooda Appointed New DGP of Chandigarh

Chandigarh, July 15, 2025 (Yes Punjab News)

In a significant development for the Union Territory of Chandigarh, the Ministry of Home Affairs has appointed Dr. Sagar Preet Hooda, a 1997-batch IPS officer from the AGMUT cadre, as the new Director General of Police (DGP).

Hooda, who was previously serving as Special Commissioner with the Delhi Police, has been transferred to Chandigarh through official MHA orders issued earlier today. His appointment brings experienced and scholarly leadership to the region, especially in the wake of administrative tensions within the senior police hierarchy of Chandigarh.

The top post had remained vacant since April, when Inspector General Rajkumar Singh was named the acting DGP following the transfer of Surendra Singh Yadav. Yadav was reassigned to the Border Security Force as Deputy Inspector General amid internal conflicts within the Chandigarh Police leadership.

A Career Marked by Excellence

Dr. Hooda is not only an accomplished law enforcement officer but also a distinguished academic. A proud alumnus of Panjab University, Chandigarh, he earned his MA and PhD in Sociology before embarking on his career in the Indian Police Service.

His impressive academic journey includes being an Edward S. Mason Fellow at Harvard University’s Kennedy School, where he pursued a master’s in Public Policy Analysis (2014–2015). Additionally, he holds a certificate in Public Finance from Duke University and completed an executive program in Leadership and Globalisation at the London School of Economics.

Professionally, Dr. Hooda held multiple key positions in the Delhi Police, including:

  • Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) from January 2022 to January 2024
  • Joint Commissioner of Police, Delhi from February 2021 to February 2022
  • Special Commissioner since January 2024, prior to his transfer

His diverse expertise in governance, policy, law enforcement, and public safety is expected to bolster Chandigarh’s policing framework significantly.

As he assumes his new role, the people of Chandigarh await progressive policing strategies and enhanced law enforcement under Dr. Hooda’s stewardship.
