If Centre runs away from MSP, state govt should guarantee procurement on its own: Harpal Cheema

Chandigarh, 20 October, 2020 (Yes Punjab News)

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab, during the specially convened session of Vidhan Sabha on Tuesday, vehemently opposed the central black laws on agriculture, brought in by the Modi government at the centre. The AAP MLAs, while supporting the three agriculture bills introduced by the Punjab government, said that the Punjab government should bring the government procurement mechanism of all crops under MSP under the ambit of law.

Leader of Opposition Harpal Singh Cheema, terming the Union Agriculture Acts akin to signing of a death warrant for farmers, alleged that the Union Government had not taken the farmers and other stakeholders into confidence.

Cheema said that the anti-farmer acts, which were passed in the House in the years 2006, 2013 and 2017 virtually paved the way for the anti-farmer central black laws being brought in under brute force, holding the then SAD-BJP, Congress governments equally responsible.

Expressing concern over the contentious bills introduced by the government today, Cheema said that under the new law introduced by the Chief Minister, procurement of crops at less than MSP would invoke 3 year jail term for any buyers, adding that if the private buyers or the Central Government Agencies did not turn up for the procurement of crops, the government of Punjab would go for the procurement of the crops itself?

He urged the government that it should come up with a bill to this effect to ensure that the government would procure all the crops at MSP.

When Chief Minister Amarinder Singh expressed his government’s inability to undertake such a guarantee, saying that the state government did not have the wherewithal as of now, the LoP said that if the state government succeeded in nailing mafia calling the shots in Punjab, the government could ensure MSP on all crops on its own.
