Holding appointment of Sikh advocates as judges of HC, discrimination against Sikhs: SGPC

Centre should appoint Sikh judges as recommended by SC: Adv Dhami

Amritsar, November 21, 2023 (Yes Punjab News)
The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami has strongly condemned the action of the Government of India of holding the appointment of two Sikh advocates out of five recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium, as judges of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

The SGPC President terming this as discrimination against Sikhs said that the Centre Government should immediately appoint both Sikh judges. In a statement, he said that the Supreme Court’s strong comment on this issue puts the Centre Government in dock.

Harjinder Singh Dhami raised question to the Centre Government that it should clarify under which policy, the Sikh advocates have been kept out of appointment, while three appointments were made of the recommended five.

The SGPC President said that Sikhs have always contributed to the country by leading from the front, but often news of their rights being suppressed comes to light. Already, Sikhs are a minority in the country and if a discriminatory attitude towards them becomes the policy of the government, then there can be no greater injustice than this.

He also praised the Supreme Court for questioning the Centre Government for not appointing two Sikh advocates as judges. He said that the Centre Government should never forget that priority should be given to the appointment of Sikh judges especially in Punjab and Haryana High Court, because the number of Sikhs in these two states is more than the rest of the country.

If Sikh judges are working in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the issues of this region and the people will be simplified in a good way. He appealed to the Centre Government to strictly implement the recommendations of the Supreme Court and appoint Harmeet Singh Grewal and Deepinder Singh Nalwa as judges.
