The centenary celebrations of Hockey India kicked off with tremendous enthusiasm at Surjit Hockey Stadium, where Surjit-XI and P.I.S.-XI registered impressive wins in two thrilling exhibition matches organised by Surjit Hockey Academy under the collaboration with Surjit Hockey Society, Jalandhar.
Dronacharya Awardee and Olympian Rajinder Singh (Junior) graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and the participating teams were introduced to him. Surjit Hockey Academy CEO Iqbal Singh Sandhu extended a warm welcome to the Chief Guest and addressed the gathering, highlighting the significance of Hockey India’s 100-year celebrations and showcasing the rich heritage of the sport in the country.
In the day’s first match, Surjit-XI delivered a spectacular performance, defeating AlFA-XI 4-1. The winners were leading 2-1 at halftime and maintained their rhythm in the second half. For Surjit-XI, Aryan, Mohit, Aditya Swami, and Harish each scored one goal, while Nitish and Vikas scored for ALFA-XI.
In the second match, P.I.S.-XI edged past Jalandhar-XI 2-1 in a nail-biting contest. P.I.S.-XI took the lead in the 10th minute through a brilliant field goal by Yuvaraj Singh, making it 1-0. They held the same scoreline until halftime. After the break, Jalandhar-XI equalised in the 40th minute with a goal from Harekambir Singh, levelling the score at 1-1. However, Yuvaraj Singh once again rose to the occasion, striking another superb field goal in the 49th minute to seal a 2-1 victory for P.I.S.-XI.
