Harsimrat Kaur Thanks PM Modi, Amit Shah for Support After Attack on Sukhbir Badal

New Delhi, August 14, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Sukhbir Singh Badal’s wife and party MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal on Friday thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for enquiring about her husband’s health following an attack on him at a gurdwara in Nanded, Maharashtra.

In separate posts on social media platform X, Harsimrat expressed gratitude to both leaders for their personal concern, support and assurances following the incident.

“Truly grateful, Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji for your personal call to enquire about Sardar Sukhbir Singh Badal ji’s health and for your good wishes for his speedy recovery following the dastardly attack on him inside a Gurudwara Sahib in Nanded, Maharashtra,” she said.

Harsimrat said Modi’s concern and support meant a lot to the Badal family, the SAD and the people of Punjab. She also thanked the Prime Minister for taking immediate cognisance of the incident and directing central investigating agencies to coordinate with Maharashtra Police in the probe.

She separately thanked Shah for personally reaching out to enquire about Sukhbir Badal’s health and for his reassurance during the “difficult time”.

Harsimrat said she appreciated the Union Home Minister’s commitment to ensuring an effective investigation into what she described as a grave violation of the fundamental tenets of Sikhism.

Sukhbir Badal was injured on Thursday when an assailant allegedly attacked him with a kirpan at the Mata Sahib Kaur Gurdwara in Nanded. The incident occurred when the SAD chief visited the gurdwara in the Hazur Sahib area on the outskirts of the city.

The attacker, identified by local authorities as 62-year-old Jaspal Singh and reportedly dressed in Nihang attire, was detained at the spot. Maharashtra Police have launched an investigation to determine the motive behind the assault.

According to sources, the attacker allegedly attempted to stab Badal in the stomach, but security personnel intervened and prevented a more serious injury. Inspector Santosh Kendre, who was deployed on special security duty, was also injured during the incident.

Badal suffered minor injuries to his hand and shoulder and was taken to Yashosai Hospital for treatment. A video recorded after the incident showed him walking with a saffron cloth wrapped around his right hand.

Harsimrat was present when the attack took place. Earlier on Thursday, Sukhbir Badal had visited Takht Sri Hazur Sahib in Nanded with his family.

The incident comes less than two years after Badal survived an assassination attempt outside the Golden Temple in Amritsar on December 4, 2024. He escaped unharmed in that incident, while the gunman was overpowered and arrested.

At the time, Badal was performing ‘sewadar’ duties at the Golden Temple after the Akal Takht had imposed ‘tankhah’, or religious punishment, on him and several other SAD leaders over alleged mistakes during the party’s 2007-2017 tenure in Punjab.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has ordered a full inquiry into the latest incident.
