Ghaggar emerges way scary than corona for Khanauri-Moonak areas: Bhagwant Mann

Sangrur, June 5, 2020 (Yes Punjab News)

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) state unit president and Member of Parliament Bhagwant Mann on Friday said that due to the stubborn stance of the state and central governments ruling the roost from time to time, the Ghaggar river had emerged potentially more frightening than the deadly corona virus holding the entire globe to ransom, for the residents some villages, including Patiala, Samana, Ghanauri, Patran, Sutrana, Moonak and Jakhal.

With a view to staving off the wrath of the Ghaggar river, dozens of neighbouring villages in Moonak-Khanauri areas had taken up the onus of strengthening the banks of the river on their own. Lauding the soaring spirits of the people in unitedly combating the menace, Mann said it was a tight slap on the face of the Capt. Amarinder Singh of Punjab and the Narendra Modi governments at the Center.

Mann on Friday visited the affected areas, including Makrod Sahib, Moonak and Chandu Kheri and interacted with the people there engaged in strengthening the Ghaggar embankment, by pressing into service their tractors, JCBs etc. Others present on the occasion were party president of Lehragaga constituency Jasveer Singh Kudni and officials of Punjab Drainage Department.

Bhagwant Mann lamented that during the last 70 years of ‘misrule’ of the Congress, BJP-SAD (Badal) governments in the state and at the Center, nothing was done to save people of the area from the onslaught of Ghaggar river, saying that monsoon had touched Kerala, the Captain Government in Punjab mulling over the issue how to tackle the fury of floods.

Mann said the government had not learned any lessons from the fury of floods that ravaged the area last year, alleging the government had run away from releasing the requisite funds to save the harried residents from the perennial problem, prompting them to take the initiative to save themselves from the onslaught.

Mann challenged the government that if the government publicly admitted that the state coffers were empty, he would be happy to shell out its MPLAD funds to tame the floods triggered by the Ghaggar river in consultation of people of Sangrur constituency.
