The BJP received a political boost in Malerkotla district on Thursday as senior Akali leader, former State Information Commissioner and former Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) member Ajit Singh Chandurayan joined the party along with around 60 local leaders and associates.
At a joining ceremony held at the Punjab BJP headquarters in Chandigarh, state president Kewal Singh Dhillon welcomed Chandurayan and his supporters by handing over primary membership slips.
The new entrants included sitting and former sarpanches, nambardars and block-level representatives from Malerkotla district.
Welcoming them, Dhillon said Chandurayan’s administrative and socio-religious experience would strengthen the party’s organisational base in Malerkotla and adjoining areas.
He said the BJP was expanding its support in Punjab, claiming that people from different sections of society were expressing confidence in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s governance and development agenda.
Taking aim at the Aam Aadmi Party government, Dhillon alleged that Punjab’s growth had suffered during its four-and-a-half years in power. He accused the state government of failing to tackle drug trafficking, gang violence, extortion and administrative problems.
Dhillon further alleged that traders, farmers, government employees and unemployed youth had been let down by the AAP government’s promises.
The Punjab BJP president said a “double-engine government”, with aligned governments at the Centre and in the state, was necessary to restore peace, revive industry, generate employment and bring Punjab back on the path of prosperity.
