New Delhi, January 9, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
The Election Commission of India has revoked the suspension of Dr Ravjot Kaur Grewal (IPS: 2015, Punjab cadre), bringing to an end a procedural impasse that had placed the Punjab government in a bind for nearly two months.
In an order dated January 8, 2026, issued by the Election Commission Secretariat, the poll body approved the revocation of Dr Grewal’s suspension with immediate effect. The Commission, however, clarified that the relief would not have retrospective application. At the time of her suspension, Dr Grewal was serving as Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Tarn Taran.
While allowing her reinstatement, the Election Commission made it clear that the final outcome of the departmental proceedings initiated against the officer will be decided only with the Commission’s concurrence, in accordance with the applicable conduct and discipline rules.
Dr Grewal, a 2015-batch IPS officer, was placed under suspension on November 8, 2025, ahead of the Tarn Taran Assembly by-election held on November 11, following complaints alleging misuse of police machinery during the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct. The action followed observations submitted by a police observer deputed by the Election Commission for the bypoll.
Since the suspension was ordered directly by the Election Commission, the Punjab Government was bound by service rules requiring mandatory consultation and concurrence of both the Election Commission and the Department of Personnel and Training before reinstating the officer.
With the revocation order now in place, Dr Grewal stands reinstated, though the ongoing disciplinary proceedings will continue under the supervisory and concurrence framework prescribed by the Election Commission.
