Fresh trouble has mounted for senior Congress leader and former MLA Dr. Navjot Kaur Sidhu as Amritsar district Congress (Urban) president Saurabh Mithu Madaan has publicly accused her of corruption and alleged involvement in selling party tickets during municipal elections.
Once considered a close associate of cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu and his wife, Mithu Madaan has now openly turned against Dr. Sidhu, warning her to stop what he called a campaign of defamation against the Indian National Congress and its senior leadership. He also threatened to bring evidence into the public domain to expose her role in alleged financial irregularities.
Addressing media persons, Madaan claimed that due to his close proximity to the Sidhu family in the past, he had first-hand knowledge of Dr. Sidhu’s alleged activities. He alleged that she was involved in selling Congress tickets for councillor elections held in 2017.
He also accused her of certain ‘corruption’ at Amritsar, Zirakpur, Kharar, and Jalandhar.
Madaan further claimed that he was aware of “who paid what and to whom,” alleging that Dr. Sidhu had even accepted gold as part of the alleged gratification. He also named Navjot Sidhu’s friend Bunny and Dr. Sidhu’s personal assistant Gaurav in connection with these allegations. “Where is Bunny now, he asked and stated that he could bring Gaurav along.”
Rejecting Dr. Sidhu’s recent claims against senior Congress leaders as baseless, Madaan asserted that she had no documentary proof to support her accusations. In contrast, he claimed that his allegations would be supported by “strong and credible evidence” and that he would soon disclose the identities of those allegedly involved.
He further alleged that despite official authority resting with Navjot Singh Sidhu at the time, it was Dr. Navjot Kaur Sidhu who allegedly exercised real control over decisions.
Welcoming the decision of Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring to suspend Dr. Sidhu from the party’s primary membership, Madaan said the action was necessary to protect the credibility of the organisation.
Reacting to Dr. Sidhu’s statement that she and her husband were prepared to face inquiries by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) or the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Madaan alleged that such remarks were being made because the Sidhu couple was now acting in tandem with the BJP.
Drawing a comparison between Dr. Sidhu’s statements and recent attacks on the Congress by Sunil Jakhar, Madaan claimed that her remarks appeared to be politically motivated and aligned with the BJP’s narrative.
