Punjab’s political atmosphere has intensified following a highly objectionable statement attributed to former Speaker and senior Congress leader Rana K.P. Singh, in which Punjabis were allegedly compared to snakes and mongooses.
Strongly condemning the remark, Pritpal Singh Baliawal, spokesperson of Bharatiya Janata Party Punjab, said that such language reflects the Congress party’s deeply disrespectful and divisive mindset towards the people of Punjab.
In a statement, Baliawal said, “It appears that Rana ji has also been influenced by the company he keeps.” He pointed out that Congress leaders have repeatedly made offensive and irresponsible remarks at times targeting Dalits, at times Sikhs, and on other occasions questioning the loyalty of Punjabis themselves. He stated that the latest comment is not only unacceptable but an insult to the dignity of Punjab and its people.
Questioning the stand of the Punjab Congress, Baliawal asked whether the party now views Punjabis as “snakes and mongooses.” He added that while Congress leaders frequently speak of love, unity, and harmony, their words and actions consistently expose prejudice and negativity towards Dalits, Sikhs, and Punjabis.
Baliawal demanded that Rana K.P. Singh issue an immediate and unconditional public apology to the people of Punjab. He further stated that silence from the Congress leadership would amount to tacit approval of such derogatory thinking.
He also urged the Punjab Government to consider making a special provision in the upcoming budget for the “treatment” of Congress leaders whose judgment, he said, appears to have become seriously impaired.
