Congress Expels Dr. Navjot Kaur Sidhu; Former MLA Targets Rahul Gandhi in Sharp Attack

Amritsar, February 6, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The Indian National Congress has formally expelled senior Punjab leader and former MLA Dr. Navjot Kaur Sidhu, bringing an end to months of internal discord and controversy surrounding her role in the party.

The decision was confirmed on Thursday by Punjab affairs in-charge Bhupesh Baghel, who stated that the suspended leader had now been removed from the party’s primary membership.

Responding strongly to the development, Dr. Sidhu took to social media platform X and launched a scathing attack on Congress leadership. In her post, she referred to senior leader and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi as “Pappu,” a term frequently used by his political rivals.

Baghel, while addressing media queries, clarified that Dr. Sidhu, who had earlier been suspended, now stood expelled from the party. “She has been removed from the Congress,” he said.

Interestingly, Dr. Sidhu had recently claimed in a social media post that she had already quit the party, adding to speculation over her political future.

Resignation and Rift With State Leadership

On January 31, Dr. Sidhu, wife of former cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu, had announced her resignation from the Congress through a strongly worded post on X.

In that message, she had launched a sharp attack on Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Raja Warring, accusing him of mismanagement, political opportunism, and weakening the party for personal interests.

A former MLA who was first elected on a BJP ticket before joining the Congress, Dr. Sidhu has remained a prominent and outspoken figure in Punjab politics. She had also claimed that her husband would return to active politics only if he was projected as the party’s chief ministerial candidate.

She further alleged that loyal leaders were sidelined, internal rivalries were encouraged, and efforts were made to undermine her electoral prospects.

“I have enough proof, but I am not interested in destroying anyone. I have quit a party where no promising leader is heard,” she had stated in her post.

Suspension Over ‘Rs 500-Crore’ Remark

Dr. Sidhu was earlier suspended from the party in December 2025 following her controversial “Rs. 500-crore briefcase” remark, which triggered widespread backlash within Congress ranks.

The suspension order was issued by PPCC president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, citing indiscipline and irresponsible conduct.

At the time, the action was viewed as a major setback for the Sidhu family, which was perceived to be close to the party high command and had publicly highlighted its rapport with Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

Following the suspension, Dr. Sidhu had escalated her criticism of senior leaders, including allegations of corruption and ticket-selling, further straining relations with the party leadership.

Political Future Remains Uncertain

With her expulsion now confirmed, political circles are abuzz with speculation about Dr. Sidhu’s next move. There have been unconfirmed reports suggesting that she may consider joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), though no official announcement has been made so far.

The latest development is being seen as a significant blow to the Congress in Punjab, especially at a time when the party is attempting to reorganise and strengthen its base ahead of future electoral challenges.
